Turbo 064 - Hugg & Pepp - Maximus EP

Posted 6/2/2009 11:00 PM by Turbo

One of our expertly trained trend-sniffing intern dogs discovered this blingin' & bangin' mashup at a local speakeasy... awwwyyeaaah... and you didn't think Turbo could get down like that!

The Dove:

i seriously have nothing to say.
i tried.
the new Hugg N Pepp, another top secret bomb that i managed to steal while in stockholm.
the biggest record EVER to use the word "Penguini"
the last time i ever try and write a one-sheet for the Dahlbacks
the horror. the horror.

the

Von Party:

I may be repeating Tiga's sentiments from previous onesheets, but it's ANNOYING how good the Dahlbäcks are. Jesper has truly made some of the best techno and acid records ever... you can play a whole night of only Jesper tracks and no one will know and everyone will love it. Still every now and then Tiga pulls out some killer old acid track and I look at him and ask "Jesper??" and he just nods. John is annoying because he had pitch-perfect HISS before he had pubes and could make a huge club record when he was 14.

The other annoying thing about Jesper is that he's got a punk attitude, hence him hoarding incredible tracks on his amazing but non-functioning Blank LTD. He's now going all anarchist scandi-commie on us and GIVING AWAY his music instead of giving it to Turbo to repackage (and sell for untold riches) so you, dear music-lover, actually know it exists. Basically, I'm annoyed at Jesper that he doesn't just give us EVERYTHING... I only want your acid to shine bright, man!!!

I think Hugg & Pepp are childhood nicknames for each other, I'd guess Jesper is Pepp, but who cares... Penguini is incredible. It is one of those records that gets more reaction than it should, somehow... a bit like Mind Dimension (also JD produced)... it has a great quality that seems rare nowadays: it doesn't sound like it's trying too hard, because it's not, because these two Swedish dweeb-prodigies don't have to try at all anymore to make incredible tracks, they just pull samples from the weirdest Italian youtube videos they can find and voila.

'I Can't Breathe' (thanks for the appealing title!) is total B-side, I won't lie... but it's B-side elevated to what B-sides should be: effortless, idiotic funk-jam, in the spirit of oldschool Svek.

To recap: Swedes are big and annoying, that's for sure... but FUCK they are kings of Techno.

Turbo 063 - Zoo Brazil & Adam Sky - Circle Jerk

Posted 5/10/2009 11:00 PM by Turbo

I know very little about Adam Sky or Zoo Brazil. I have no idea how they came together to make this track. I know that Tiga had a picture of Adam Sky up on his wall when he was a kid, that he wanted to BE him, and that Adam put his first record out 30 years ago, which dethrones Sven Väth and makes him the longest-active, still relevant producer as far as I know.*

Zoo Brazil actually made a track for Kylie. He’s also a big fan of my puppet work (see Tiga’s ‘Hot in Herre’) and he wanted me to make a music video for him but I couldn’t make mini-puppet-faces in time… oh well…

The track was given to Tiga while he was working with Jesper at Globe studios in Stockholm. Zoo Brazil’s studio was next door and he would peep in and they’d all eat lunch and discuss remixology. He gave Tiga the demo in November 2007, so at 17 months, this is officially the slowest ever Turbo release, beating out last month’s Guy J by a full 4 months.

The truth is my enthusiasm for the track hasn’t waned one bit, a testament to the raw power of a strong System 100 groove. It’s been a secret weapon that I’ve played all year. I’m happy to report that this track also gets the rare support of rising megastar PROXY… for a techno record, that’s quite an achievement.

Rejecting 6 (!) remixes slowed things down a lot, but our ruthless commitment to quality paid off in the end... Bloody Beetroots delivered an outstanding mix. I swear, I normally can’t stand ear-bleed nurave, but this is a big winner… Tiga has been playing it constantly… plus, they’re Italian so it’s all vibrazioni positivi, dai!!!

Speaking of Italy… Milano is a new pseudonym from a fellow Canadian party man. He made killer techno records a decade ago and we’re proud to present this comeback remix… No-nonsense old school techno upgraded to 2k9 audio standards… speaking of 2k9… he’s a name to watch.

* This forces a retraction from my last onesheet about TMV-04 // Mohan Das

Turbo 062 - Guy J - Shaman

Posted 2/23/2009 12:00 AM by Turbo

When Guy J's 'Skin' hit #2 on Beatport, it was a defining moment... beatporters had spoken loud and clear, deafening the shrill cries of infant bloggers... the 'Isreality EP' was a hit for Turbo, and we were amazed to see a lush, proggy track outsell most of our heavily hyped 'bangers'.

After that success, Guy's manager sent me a bunch of new tracks, many of which ended up on the critically acclaimed 'Esperanza' LP... 'Shaman' was my favorite of the bunch. We could have just released it... but next-level A&R is about more than choosing tracks... it's about choosing eras, and we needed to finish nu-rave before we could begin the tropic-o-bongo house revolution of 2009...  Credit the Turbo administrative vacuum for sitting on a track this good for so long, until great remixes are done, and the world is ready.

Tiga and I have both played it towards the end of some very special sets in the last year... it has a nice type of 'soft' impact... it somehow manages to add energy to the crowd without being louder than the track before it. To the tired ears of veteran dj's, that's a rare pleasure.

There are also some great remixes in this pack... a subtle, punchy rework by Mohan Das, an extremely playable, deep, dubby mix from the venerable Cari Lekebusch, and last but not least, available digital-only, a beautiful mix from Factor City's Lontano. I swear, the Lontano is the best, it just sounds better in digital-only.

Turbo 061 - Kolombo - Sniff EP

Posted 1/30/2009 12:00 AM by Turbo

OK OK.. fuck, this onesheet is overdue. Tiga has been working hard finishing his album and I've been off-duty, on holiday in India the past two weeks. I'm in Schiphol airport now, drinking tea, about to take a shower in the 'crown lounge'. That's right, thanks to Turbo's success I achieved Skyteam and Star Alliance gold! Anyways, I badly wanted to freak out and stay in my psy-tropical paradise, but we have dance music that needs to be pressed onto vinyl and written about so that you can download it now for free... the saga continues:

Kolombo puts out a lot of records. Some of them I love, most of them are too housey and boring for me. His stuff always sounds great, but teeters dangerously on that line of commercial club music... reminding me of overly groomed men and cologne blowing in the smoke machine.

That sounds bad, but it's the truth, the same as it's true that these two tracks are total standouts and have been effective weapons lately f! or the few Turbo VIP's that have them.

'Sniff' takes hiss, THE sound of '08 (Popof, anyone?) to the next level by punctuating each white-noise breakdown with a giant sample of a human sniff!!! Genius... and perhaps the first true blow anthem ever in techno.* This should be number one on Beatport.

'Pique Nique' may have an annoying name and start off a bit boring, but the breakdown is a game changer, modulating from chirpy fairy wiggle-house down to a sub bass groove that achieves the requisite hands-in-the-air factor without making anyone feel they need to play Crookers for the rest of the night (note: we LOVE Crookers... Ciao, ragazzi!!)

That's it and that's all... two great tracks, no lame remixes... enjoy!

*note from Tiga: I think it is safe to say that "Your Only Friend" by Phuture is the first "blow anthem" in techno..... but lets say this is  the most recent.

Turbo 060 - Jesper Dahlbäck - Cables & Things EP

Posted 1/1/2009 12:56 PM by Turbo

Turbo 060

In Jori Hulkkonen's words:

Apparently there's another Jesper Dahlbäck record coming out on Turbo as they asked for a onesheet. Not sure which tracks are on it so I can't really talk about the record. So why do I feel I can write a onesheet about it? Because there are very few producers I can trust as I trust Jesper.

Ever since the good old techno days (see my previous onesheet about Cari Lekebusch) to the genre-defining deephousesound of SVEK records in the late 90's to only last month when I asked Jesper if he had any tracks to give me to try out only to receive 27 new slamming unreleased tunes, I've always had a selection to spin (remember the etymology of the verb, regarding those round discs) a Jesper production to a connoisseur crowd that may otherwise be hard to win on my side.

I could go on and write about our ! classic back-to-back DJ sets we've done ever since the mid 90's all the way from northern Finland to the classic Turbo parties in Miami WMC, or our studiosessions combining Kebabs (or recently falafels) and Acid, or the ambitious Acid Symphony Orchestra where I'm the conductor and Jesper is the "principal first violin". But I won't. Google it up! And get every JD record you can!

In TVP’s Words:

Since Jori didn’t comment on the actual tracks I’ll chime in here to give you a quick rundown… Jesper is a chronically underrated producer, a huge figure in Turbo’s history, and arguably the most important person in Tiga’s career, having co-produced some of his best remixes and original tracks.

The A-side is pure Dahlbäck… winding acid grooves with crystal hi-hats and enough reverby modulations to keep you locked in the fun-matrix. Mega Signalizer is my pick on here… a playable, punchy, and yes ! FUNKY track, finally, Master Circuit is a paranoid gear-change! r, but N OT annoying… and like all Jesper’s records, it sounds incredible out. Classic Turbo vibes… another winner!

Turbo 059 // Brodinksi

Posted 12/4/2008 10:29 AM by Turbo

In Matt Walsh’s words:

I met Brodi early last year, he had a track called “Bad Runner” that I had been playing incessantly. It leaked onto blog sites months before it’s release on Mental Groove in October 2007. It found it’s way into Erol’s box among many others very early on and the hot fuss began.

As a DJ, despite hailing from France (Reims, Lille), unexpectedly Brodi’s taste is broad.  If your expecting banging gnarly electro bombs… unlucky.  He can play anything from noisy techno, bass heavy house through to more melodic minimal. Plus, if you think you spend more time searching the net for new tunes than anyone else, think again.  This guy is committed and now his second, and even better EP is here and he has saved it just for Turbo.

The title track “Oblivion” is typical of Brodi’s production style.  Punchy, driving drum patterns and a huge elastic synth line that spirals into histrionic, throbbing techno.

He set us (Clouded Vision) the task of remixing it and all I could think of was the English Alton Towers roller coaster ride, Oblivion.  Therefore our mix had to build up to a great height and drop heavily from the top.  We kept a lot of the original heavy synths and added a housier drum pattern to change the groove.

The B side, Gold Digger again hits you with big drums and maximum impact but still keeps a nice progressive acid groove.  With old school house undertones and a cut-up vocal cough there is enough to please the fist pumpers out there and those that actually still like to dance with their legs.

Noob is a new French dude you may not have heard of.  When you hear his remix you will realize that, yes he is Popof’s friend and his production has even bigger balls.

Oblivion is finally here and Brodinski continues his one 6’2” man mission to take over boys and girls hearts across the world.

Turbo 057 // DMX Krew

Posted 12/4/2008 10:23 AM by Turbo

In Thomas Von Party’s words:

We at Turbo are longtime fans of DMX Krew, so it's a real honor to work with him again 6 years after his last contribution to our now defunct sub-label 'White Leather'. We don't normally trace an artist's history or include much biography in our press releases, but we feel the need in this case to pay our respects to a long and brilliant career. With all the crap that gets paraded around nowadays it's easy to forget who the real masters are... ED DMX is one of them.

I've always held a soft spot for Ed, he was one of my favorite producers in the proto-electro heyday. Hearing his live version of the Knight Rider theme at Sona (Tiga's club circa '96) was (believe it or not) a revelation. Of all the artists I'd met up until then, he was the coolest: he could play synths better than anyone I'd ever heard, he had the balls to do vocals in his live-set, but he was a sweet, soft-spoken, and super funny guy.

For reasons I've never understood, Ed's pop side didn't seem to take off and for awhile things took a distinctly experimental turn... interesting stuff, but a departure from the bright immediacy I loved in his earlier records. I was starting to put him into that category of genius artist that pissed me off because they weren't making the music I wanted them to make, but were on some brain-trip doing things I didn't understand (think Aphex Twin, Prince, Jori Hulkkonen...). So I let him fall off my radar... And THEN...

2007 rolls around and his alias 101 Force drops " 'Tha Return', followed shortly thereafter by 'SH101 Triggers MS10', easily two of my favorite records of the year and some of the best acid house ever made. Buy them now. I could blather on and on about how incredible those records are, but the important thing is that we took action and signed 'The Bass Drop.'

This EP doesn’t reference or pay homage to Acid House so much as it embodies it. This is the real deal.

It is with great pride that we bring you DMX Krew, same as he ever was, the analog don back to school all you blog-turds in the art of the acid groove.

Turbo 058 // ZZT

Tags: electro, house, dance, electronic

Wish-Wingèd Worldman Tiga and Munich superproducer Zombie Nation are back to transport you somewhere between Tampa Bay and Tampa Beyond with the new ZZT single “The Worm”.

Warmly encouraging “up-and-coming” Mutant/Producers to refrain from foisting their braindeath coma fantasies on the world, the release also features Erol Alkan’s eagle-eyed mind’s ear on an extended rework.

The collaboration was a natural one, as Tiga was a public champion of Zombie’s Black Toys LP, while Zombie magnanimously tolerated Tiga’s deep vocal loosehouse epic “M’Unique (Won’t Play That Shame Game Again, No)”.

The song itself secretes a thick, grassy oil onto the club floor, creating a rich, profoundly damp environment for rock dancing, searchingly soulful head-nods and murder from beyond the grave.

Roused from the psychic abyss where he toils daily to defend our realm from the Inevitable, Tiga says, “The track is ‘earthy’ in the same way our very world is ‘earthy.’ All moist browns and feminine longing. Can we in these times of 2008 be whisked away to a place of beaded centaurs and wonderful villages? I daresay yes, and I dare to say yes”.

This is the one. Massive support by Boys Noize, Tiga, Justice, Soulwax, et al.

Erol Alkan gave us his poetic take on the record via iChat:

I heard it in a car

Didnt feel it

Actually

Thats a lie

I did feel it

It wasn’t until I saw Xavier play it to 10,000 Tiesto fans

At that festival

That it made sense

It's simple beyond comprehension,

It’s been one of the biggest

Records of the year for many of us

And it will probably

Disappear by December

Only for us to rediscover it again in 2012

And declare it a work of genius.
