CMJ: DOWNLOAD: Tigercity - Are You Sensation (VHS Or Beta Remix)

In what I imagine is either their just due or another case of festishizing the eighties, Hall & Oates have been getting the nod lately from some current artists. The Chromeo guys appeared on an episode of Live From Daryl’s House—the in-the-studio online video series beamed straight from Daryl Hall’s home studio—and even that tattooed guy from Gym Class Heroes gave them some sweet ups on MTV. I don’t know how many H&O records Brooklyn’s Tigercity or their buds in VHS Or Beta own, but after listening to this remix of Tigercity’s live favorite “Are You Sensation” I would guess it would be more than several. The VOB guys keep the original’s conga loop and yacht rock chorus melodies intact, just adding some fresh disco thump and peeling away some of the squirly keys, giving us this mix that sounds like, well, some Brooklyn dance dudes appearing on an episode of Live From Daryl’s House.

Tigercity are playing two CMJ shows this week:
Tuesday, 10/21 – The Studio @ Webster Hall (10:00PM)
Wednesday, 10/22 – Mercury Lounge (1:00AM [Thursday morning])

Sounds like: Chromeo, Holy Ghost!, Hall & Oates

FEATURED: Yacht Rock at the SEEN RCRD LBL blog

If you’ve never gotten into the Channel 101 cult mockumentary series Yacht Rock, consider this your chance—they’ve just released their much-anticipated Episode 11, and the guys at the SEEN RCRD LBL blog are all about it. In a nutshell, Yacht Rock is a fake VH1-style soft rock history program hosted by a bespectacled music nerd named Hollywood Steve. In fictionalizing relationships and rivalries between artists such as Hall & Oates, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins and Toto, Yacht Rock takes the viewer back to a time when men were men, beards were really important, and no human could overcome the power of a really smooth groove. It’s definitely the greatest musical satire since This Is Spinal Tap, and we’ve obsessively watched every episode at least five times. At a recent screening of the series at the Knitting Factory in NY (where Episode 11 was premiered!) we kind of scared ourselves with our ability to recite aloud every line. We posted #11 above, and also check out or favorite episode of the series below: #4, or Toto's "Rosanna"
