STREAM: Flying Lotus - RobertaFlack

We’re pretty excited about Flying Lotus’ upcoming new record Los Angeles, dropping on Warp this summer. We posted a stream of “Parisian Goldfish”, a very interesting space disco number, and today’s track "RobertaFlack" sounds less like, well, Roberta Flack and more like Beth Gibbons trying to dispatch an urgent radio message through a busted walkie-talkie. That FlyLo—always surprising us.
Sounds like: Massive Attack, Portishead

FEATURED: Portishead and Kling Klang and the SEEN RCRD LBL blog

Like every self-respecting music fan in the world, the SEEN RCRD LBL blog is going completely crazy with anticipation for the new Portishead record, Third, and their upcoming headline set at Coachella this weekend. The band haven’t been to America in nearly a decade, so obviously this is a big deal. We’re kind of dismayed (read: totally devastated) that there aren’t any NYC Portishead dates as of yet, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed.
Always on top of it, SEEN also posted an MP3 from Kling Klang, who opened for Portishead for their recent European dates. Check it out:

Portishead Returns for Coachella + Kling Klang Download

The buzz is all over the Internet. Portishead is releasing its third album after a long three-year absence. Released on April 28th, Geoff Barrow and Beth Gibbons have come together to produce the 11-track album simply called "Third". There's something poetic about the timing, but what's the significance of 3-3-3?
We're anticipating the big sound from Portishead's understated single -word track names like "Silence", "Plastic" and "Small". It's gonna be huge. For a preview of the album go to the Coachella Music Festival (April 25-27 at Empire Polo Field in Indio, Calif.) where Portishead will play their first show on American soil in nearly a decade! For the full line-up click here. If you were lucky enough to be in Europe this spring you'd be spoilt as Portishead were playing gigs in Portugal, Italy, UK, Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands, France and Brussels. We checked out the supporting acts on that tour and had never heard of the odd A Hawk and a Hacksaw, but we loved Liverpool's Kling Klang so much we got you all a download. Kling Klang describe themselves as "...5-piece heavy experimental synthesiser krautrock orchestra with amplified vintage synths, futuristic riffs, electric guitars and live drums".
Enjoy das Krautrock!

Finally, word on the street is that there's a secret gig in LA this week...Remember who told you first.
And If you need a reminder of Portishead's classic sound, check out their 1994 film noir, "To Kill A Dead Man". That film score deserves a release! Pleease.
DOWNLOAD: Little Dragon - Fortune

We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again: is there anything Sweden can’t do? Is it illegal to be in a lame band over there? Seriously, everyone who picks up an (government-provided we are sure—what up, socialism!) instrument creates the most amazing music. Today, we have a song by Little Dragon, “Fortune”, which is a dreamy, laid-back slice of electro pop that wouldn’t feel awkward on a particularly Goldfrapp-y Massive Attack record. For some reason the instrumental breakdown towards the end kind of reminds of an ’80s soap opera theme song, only distorted and fed through a Roland 808. If that makes any sense.

Little Dragon hail from Gothenburg, which we daresay must be the very cradle of Swedish indie rock coolness, as it’s home to the likes of José González, El Perro del Mar, Soundtrack of Our Lives, Love is All, and loads of other awesome bands. We’ve already booked our plane ticket.
VIDEO THRWBCK: Goldfrapp - Lovely Head
It's the weekend, so we figured we'd take a break from bringing you, the RCRD LBL reader, the newest bands and videos, and concentrate on some old favorites instead (we're calling it VIDEO THRWBCK--awesome, right?). Hailing from Bath, UK, Goldfrapp are about to release their fourth album Seventh Tree, and far from being a disco stomper á la Supernature (their previous LP) it's a soft, muted folk pop record, like Carole King hanging out with Peter Gabriel circa So. What with Portishead making their grand comeback and Moloko frontwoman Roisin Murphy being one of the most talked-about pop stars on the scene, it seems like a trip-hop throwback is inevitable. Today we posted Goldfrapp's first video, for the haunting "Lovely Head" off of their debut record Felt Mountain. Enjoy!
DOWNLOAD: Readymade FC feat. Feist - Snow Lion

It’s highly debatable whether the nation of France will ever give birth to anything other than really awesome electronic music. Jean-Philippe Verdine—a.k.a. Readymade FC—is no exception to the rule, that’s for sure. Like the laid-back ambient pop of Air aping Post-era Björk, Readymade creates earthy, dreamy trip-hop, chilling like it’s 1995. The track we’re releasing today, “Snow Lion”, is notable because it features everyone’s favorite Canada-born, Paris-dwelling folk pop diva Feist on vocal duties. Cue the sound of a million indie kids’ heads exploding.
“Snow Lion” would fit seamlessly on Goldfrapp’s Felt Mountain record (which coincidentally has been getting a lot of love in the office lately), with the latent hip hop beats and harp action. It’s kind of amazing. Readymade FC is signed to London's Peacefrog Records (home to Speck Mountain and José González), and released "Snow Lion" on his 2006 LP Babilonia.
DOWNLOAD: DJ Spooky - Galactic Funk (Tau Ceti mix)

The SEEN RCRD LBL blog just posted an article on Washington DC-based experimental hip hop artist DJ Spooky’s new project Terra Nova: Antarctica Suite, a found sound album made from field recordings of arctic ice melting. Scary, but also pretty cool. Spooky is premiering parts of the project tomorrow at the Sundance film festival, and SEEN has all the deets. They also posted “Galactic Funk (Tau Ceti mix)”, a classic track from DJ Spooky’s 1996 record Songs of a Dead Dreamer. Enjoy.
FEATURED: His Name Is Alive

When His Name Is Alive—the Michigan-based '90s alt. band—released Someday My Blues Will Cover The Earth in 2001, it had an effect on us, especially the track “Write My Name In The Groove”. Firstly, because the song was featured in a compilation from French music mag Les Inrockuptibles that year (oh, how we love our import magazines) and secondly, because Someday… was released at the same time as Alicia Keys’ Songs In A Minor, and the resemblance between the two records was quite remarkable. “Write My Name In The Groove” is coasting R&B like Keys but with more wit, credibility, and hurt: HNIA vocalist Lovetta Pippen nails the aching of the lyrics perfectly. Bury Me Not featured Someday…-era His Name Is Alive today.
