PREMIERE: W-H-I-T-E - Fountain (Lucky Dragons Remix)

Posted by Shannon Hassett

Tags: tribal, synth

The original of "Fountain" is the perfect introduction to W-H-I-T-E, the moniker of California's Cory Thomas Hanson. Pairing his ethereal crooning with a number of smaller beats, it's a lively take on the normally fluffy terrain of cathedral pop. LA's Lucky Dragons was thus a fitting choice for a reworking, adding its signature blend of tribal and trance to accentuate Hanson's muted shade of a shared love of sampling. "Fountain" can be found on Twin Tigers, out now on Swill Children

Wildbirds & Peacedrums seem the kind of band who'd enjoy a ceremony - "Fight For Me" sounds like the announcement of something: a marching song, juddering with choral chants and ominous bass drum booms. That apparent lust for ritual might explain why they'll release two vinyl-only EPs (Retina and Iris) over the next couple of months before uniting them together as an album called Rivers in August. From the sounds of things it's not gonna be the happiest of unions, but it'll certainly snare your interest: like a punch-up at a wedding, perhaps.

Rolling in on tubs thumped like they were once Burundi and bruised by Malcolm McClaren’s ‘80s pop tykes Bow Wow Wow, Stricken City re-strike that band’s awkwardly lusty poses into awkwardly romantic ones; frontgirl Rebekah Raa sweet where 14-year-old Annabella Lwin made desperate lunges for your 'candy'. The young London quartet can trace their origins back, way back and before GCSES, to Raa and guitarist Iain Pettifer’s maths lessons. In 2006 Kit Godfrey was brought in to thump those tubs and Mike Hyland joined on bass in August this year. Together they work through "Lost Art", low-end slipping and sliding all over the place beneath guitars that are altogether more elegant, their crunch and willingness to leave things unsaid recalling the pained restraint of Young Marble Giants. The remix is to be treasured – lazily psychedelic with synths that burble like the proverbial brook, Gold Panda sends Raa’s voice to the back of the class, making her swap seats with the bad-boy bass which teacher catches in a loop in an effort to stunt its more erratic tendencies.

The name Catz N' Dogz goes a long way to describe the crowded techno sound of this young Polish duo. After starting off (and still producing as) 3 Channels, the pair took on the new nom de plume to match the sonic evolution fully explored in their forthcoming debut album, Stars of Zoo. Blending techno sub-genres without sacrificing many of their traits, Catz N' Dogz's dense and constantly unfolding tracks sound a bit like a canine vs feline cage match, leaving dancers sweating as the fur flies. For an example, look no further than "Yes They Still Play Casio": propelled by gulping bongo rolls (courtesy of Mathias Kaden), swaying back and forth to a ticking Casio and Rhodes chords, and broken up by the howls of cats and dogs. Rest assured, Catz N' Dogz are no novelty act, but rather two guys with a slightly novel way of filling the dance floor. Rawr!

You ever see somebody play the bejesus out of a xylophone? The two hand attack, arms crossed, eyes darting everywhere, not a note out of place? Well we saw it a few days ago waiting for the train and it was a sly wink from God like, "Hey buddy, you're on the right platform." Or at least that's what it sounded like at the time. Turns out we're hard of hearing and God was actually saying, "In a couple days you're gonna freak out about Sian Alice Group's epic-as-fuck pow-wow explosion."

And God was right. How do these geniuses make distortion and fuzz and modern language sound so primitive? On "Motionless" they set jagged downbeat guitar stabs and pristine casino xylophone solos (!) to this crude, campfire drumroll that turns the whole thing all bugged out hunter-gatherer. Totally witchy and enthralling. Kinda like if you took away Mobius Band's keyboards and gave them a cave.

Big, big bonus: They're in from England and playing Annex TONIGHT. Definitely paint your face and get there. Buncha other Social Registry heads on the bill too, so don't blow it. Watch for an interview next week.
