L.A. popsters Light FM have got the West Coast cadence down-pat: cheeky name, sad lyrics rife with meaning, additive-laden sing-a-long hooks. They’re even synced on Gossip Girl and The Hills while the moodily beautiful slip in and out of their respective speakeasies and sandcastles. Featuring members from Sea Wolf, Veruca Salt and Spinerette, their deft musicality rockets them far above the usual Top-40-worthy joint in “Friends Aren’t Friend’s”—a slickly produced tune with perfect harmonies laced with a little Death Cab mange. LA’s Morgan Page is known on the circuit for his anthemic prog-house-electro tracks, so we figured “Fight For You” would be another crossover gem. We were right! Equally suitable for the basement at 2 am or the best dancepop soundtrack MTV ever hopes to cull, the Katy Perry-style hooks interplay with tinfoil beats and sugary synths and we very much would like to choreograph a circle dance to it. Believe doesn’t come out until 2010, but we hope to snatch two excellent edits of this track by DJ Dan and BassKleph from our buddies at Nettwerk before too long.

The Scottish Blink 182. That’s what Twin Atlantic conjures and it is hypnotizing. The well-timed drums, the sing-along pop punk, the danger of the screaming fangirl stampede. It’s all there! But you know? Today is not a day to shun mass-emo-Commonwealth joy just because it's familiar. Instead it’s a day to look Top 40 in its unflinching eye and give a happy sneer because these Glaswegians could knock Britney off for good. Their tracks are as universal as belly-flopping in the pool at high school graduation and on top of that, these blokes have toured with Smashing Pumpkins. Twin Atlantic's new album Vivarium comes out stateside on Red Bull Records on Sept. 15th.
