Les Six Years Du Institubes (2/2)
The temporary relocation of the Institubes headquarters to Miami Beach goes on with the US-only digital release of the super cleverly-titled “Les Six Years Du Institubes” (boom: just like the party! this is corporate synergy at its best!) compilation on iTunes.
This obscenely low priced 12-track collection gathers some of our favourite cuts from the last couple of years, with some rarities such as Rubato’s “Institubes Express 999” and Zeus’ “Zeus” (from the ZEUS single).
As a bonus, there’s a digital booklet with the exhaustive illustrated Institubes checklist (including every release since 2003), a foreword by label manager Jean-René Etienne, and even his signature in case you wanna forge a fake artist deal and sign yourself to Institubes.
Quite appropriately, the compilation ends with Curses!’s new single “The Deep End” (feat Maggie Horn), which we’ll be sharing with you tomorrow.

PS: oh and did I mention Surkin exclusive performance at Miami Beach's Apple Store this Thur. at 7pm?
LES SIX YEARS DU INSTITUBES (1/2)
Not that we're particularly good as preserving traditions, but celebrating Institubes birthdays was always a French--if not Parisian--affair. But this year it's so cold in Paris that we're moving it to Miami. Pretty much everyone from the label will be there, plus some special guests.
If by any chance, you're spending some time at this thing they call WMC, especially this Wednesday, come and celebrate with us.
Tickets here.
Fool’s Gold Remixed Vinyl

Our promo-only Fool’s Gold Remixed 12″s finally arrived in the house house house. Four of the biggest tracks off our Scion A/V compilation from this past fall on one thick slab of vinyl: Chromeo’s funked up take on Treasure Fingers’ “Cross The Dancefloor,” Surkin’s choppy version of Nacho Lovers’ “Acid Life,” Rusko dropping dubstep bombs all over Kid Sister’s “Pro Nails,” and Jori Hulkonnen’s hypnotic, techy remix of Kid Cudi’s “Day ‘N’ Nite.”
This is a limited, one-time only pressing for friends, fam and assorted DJs, but we were able to get a few copies over to Turntable Lab, so cop it while you can!
Who Does Your Artwork? 2. Gaspirator
Gaspirator, born Gaspard Augé, is responsible for all of Surkin’s artworks, giving the young boy his own retro gaming-inspired series of sleeves. He’s the tyrannical CEO of the one-Man-and-one-Mac studio AirBrush Counterfeit.

Gaspirator draws inspiration from the works of Doug Johnson, Hajime Sorayama, Heinz Edelmann, sound library record covers, heavy metal imagery, and 1960’s to early 1980’s pop culture.

His first collaboration with the label was the graphical rehaul for the re-release of the twin singles “GHETTO OBSESSION” and “RADIO FIREWORKS” in 2006. It was also our first departure from the Akroe template.

Then came the heavy metal logo for the Japan-only mini album “ACTION REPLAY” plus its cotton companion, and the “FIREWORKS REFIRED” remix ep.

As a token of his eternal gratitude, Surkin gives him some over-zealous tooth brushing lessons at any time of the day.

(the Def Leppard fan on the right of the picture is Surkin’s own beloved grandfather Vincent, also a true inspiration for female dental hygiene enthousiasts all over the globe)
More recently, Gaspirator has done several collaborations with tee shirt label SIXPACK.
He has also drawn the White Knight’s helmet against a dazzling kaleidoscopic backdrop of the World’s most complex chrome-plated Rubik’s Cube for Surkin’s “NEXT OF KIN” EP, first released on vinyl in a limited silver foil sleeve.

Gaspard is currently enjoying an awesome life as the (truly) mustachioed half of Justice.
