PREMIERE: Two Wounded Birds - I Think The World Of You

The deserted beach vibe of “I Think The World Of You” sucks a good deal of the joy out of the song’s cute title. So too does Two Wounded Birds’ mopey bass, sharp surf guitars and mushmouth vox. It’s all kind of depressing and ghoulish, really. Still, it's quite pretty. And very, very good for making out under the boardwalk. So, of course, we love it. The band’s new single Together Forever arrives on Moshi Moshi on October 31 and you’d be remiss not to get it early right here.

PREMIERE: Bobby Birdman - Don't Walk Away

Bobby Birdman is busy. Former Portland resident, frequent K-conspirator, YACHT backing band member and current LA man about town, Rob Kieswetter has spread his wings in a big way. Tomorrow sees the release of a 7-inch of his own, and A-side "Don't Walk Away" proves why the singer is so in-demand. With a voice as at home doing folk songs as surf rock gems, this track seems to nicely blend the two, showcasing Birdman's signature croon over an upbeat bass. The B-side features a remix by Selector Dub Narcotic himself, one Calvin Johnson, and you can grab the disc tomorrow from K.

Another pretty three piece from Brooklyn with punk tendencies and clean vocals—just what we need, right? Sea Monsters are a cut above their flanneled fellows, however, with recording that reminds me of Fucked Up at times and refreshingly devoid of the fuzz standard on most surf tracks these days. They balance the line between that breed of pop and rock handily, "Riff Jam" often transitioning between the two for a catchy three-minute tune about losing control at the local bar and nothing ever going right—just the ticket for your Monday morning introspection.

It's nice when you pick up a new drummer and actually return to form, the fortunate fate of the Vivian Girls as evidenced on new single "I Heard You Say." The group's third album and first after Ali Koehler booked it for Best Coast, Share The Joy (Polyvinyl) is a title that playfully jabs at the sad and sultry crooning that makes these girls so great. More akin to the rough and tumble garage pop of the debut self-titled than 2009's Everything Goes Wrong, it'll please the veterans and newcomers alike, so it's back to cry clap cry clap for everyone.

In “Sur La Planche,” be-scarved Parisian crew La Femme does the impossible: They make Rock Lobster rock sound chic. Borrowing from the lo-fi surf stylings of Best Coast and Wavves, La Femme ultimately lands in sleeker waters by spiking the tune with peachy pop vocals and new wave skins. In an alternate universe, Godard wears huaraches, and he dances to Le Podium #1: La Femme, out on Third Side now.

Vaseline dreamers Two Wounded Birds make guttural surf rock that often invokes princes of the beach Ricky Nelson or Eddie Cochran, depending on the track. “Night Patrol,” falls more under king Dick Dale, if Dick were slipped a few klonopin in as many whiskies. Though the twang swings low and slow, it’s still got a menacing energy as swamp and fire fight for equal share under lullaby vocals. This stealthy, end-of-the-pier jam can be heard on the Keep Dreaming Baby EP via Holiday Friends, and for another week, on stage, as the band wraps up touring with The Drums.

Say, do you think you’re primo? A real gas? Think leaving the microwave cookery to the dipsticks and laying daily rubber in your deuce is enough? Not so fast, Billy. You’re not worth the spit on your suicide knob without the latest music radio speaker sounds. Better go pick up some Heavy Hawaii creep rock. “Sleeping Bag”’s got enough bird tweets, ghostly pallor, and waterlogged gee-tars to take you from zero to hero. Go ape on the rest of the nifty, unsettling prom ballads over at Art Fag, home of the HH release.

DOWNLOAD: Heavy Hawaii - Teen Angel

While Heavy Hawaii has a tome of a press release—likening their ‘60s-style Cali creep-rock to Manson, Wilson, and a zombie recast of the movie Grease—nowhere does it say that half the band used to share the stage with Nathan Williams before he was bka as the polarizing force Wavves. While that fact does give some context, the truth is this sound is not that sound, and these guys are not that guy. Heavy Hawaii is more porous, fluid, and at times, even celebratory. “Teen Angel” is classic pop with a death rattle, an irresistible sing-a-long as weird and as wrong as ‘Ring Around The Rosie.’ The candy-colored debut vinyl from which it sprang is called HH, now in limited pressing on Art Fag.
