DOWNLOAD & WATCH: Dead Confederate - The Rat & Video
While the Georgian band Dead Confederate definitely has its Lynyrd Skynyrd undertones, their music is also in the same league as the psychedelic cowboys The Black Angels: redefining "Southern Rock" with a hint of darkness and whiskey-smoked reverb. In this song “The Rat,” lead singer Hardy Morris sounds like a dead ringer for Kings of Leon’s Caleb Followill.
IDead Confederate's new album "Wrecking Ball," comes out in stores today. It was recorded in a veritable "shit shack" in Austin- the same place where the Texas Chainsaw Massacre sound effects were recorded. It's got an addictive, greasy and dark tonality.
Oh and we popped in the video for "The Rat" above. It's wicked in a morose and rusty way. Check it above.
Sounds Like: The Black Angels, Kings of Leon

In a land where tambourines sound like rattlesnakes and electric guitar reprises are perfect soundtracks to a slow-speed race between a greaser and an outlaw, Gringo Star’s gritty rock rules supreme. This clap-happy Southern-rock-influenced psych-rock band is from Atlanta, Georgia. The dudes never purported to be politically correct, (see band name and thank The Beatles), but regardless, we dig their style and their unaffected DIY ask-questions-later attitude.

If this is what evolves in the backwoods of Wisconsin, I’ll take the next greyhound. The Wildbirds craft rough, wind-blistered, and dusty rock and roll. In “Shake Shake”, lead singer Nicholas Stuart commands attention, screeching, “Now all I ask is skin and soul,” with a voice like Mick Jagger with 10 added years of Marlboro Reds abuse. You remain intent till the end when it erupts with country blues electric jamming. Meanwhile, the on-the-porch-drinking-whiskey love song “Susanna” is simply strummed and vocally croaked.

DOWNLOAD: Blitzen Trapper- Wild Mountain Nation

Blitzen Trapper's rustic, 'nature's wild child’ music is highly recommended when:
A) You're chilling with your guitar on the front porch of the wooden shack that you built with your own bearclaws
B) Put on a mix between the Allman Brothers and The Band, while driving Route 66, windows down, dust trailing behind
C) Your hunter-gatherer tribe is alongside a trickling creek and 113-yeard-old fir trees, surrounded by fairy people who survive off select herbs, berries and the writings of Emerson
D) Paired with some peyote
The sextet's "Wild Mountain Nation" below is an ode to southern rock, heartfelt and deliberately rough around the edges- with fuzzed-out guitars and laidback twang. If you dig it, you'll be psyched to know that the dudes are putting in serious road mileage the next two months, performing in a ton of cities coast-to-coast. Check their myspace for more info.
