Youtube Is Weird

I found these homemade videos for DOP songs on Youtube. It's moving, and weirdly voyeuristic, to peer into the world of total strangers who used our songs to soundtrack a slice of their lives.

The first one is nothing but shots of a woman in training for a marathon. We see her running on overpasses, sidewalks, leafy paths, beaches. I'm guessing she's in Florida, based on the vegetation, and that she's being filmed by her loving husband, cheering her along every step of the way. But who knows? Maybe she's being stalked. The song is "Girls and Sunshine," from our first EP. There's a very small cult that thinks this is our best song and call for it at shows. We pretend not to hear them.

And in this one a young Canadian takes a snowy bike ride around his subdivision, to the tune of "Your Summer Dress."  If only we had called the song "Your Winter Dress," this would be the perfect video. I love it. Thanks, nastyrats!

Valentine's Day with Band of Horses + Dirty on Purpose

We are playing a show with Band of Horses on Valentine's Day (yeah yeah we know, a commercial holiday, but having a reason to make out is always good). The good folks over at JellyNYC put together the lovefest at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple. Kinda spooky, kinda romantic? We dig it. We hope you do too. You can purchase tickets at ticketweb.com.

Mixing with Mark Ephraim + Paul Mahajan, Damn Fine Handsome Producers

Just some photos from the mixing process of our Dead Volcanoes EP for RCRDLBL.com. We would listen to those songs over and over and over again... They are finally finished! We can't wait for you to hear them... The last three songs come out in February, March and April.

Looks like George is getting hungry...

Doug is the laid-back type.

Paul stares into the abyss of the machine...

Mark, George and DJ are obviously concentrating very hard.

"Leaving" Lyrics

i see you doing dishes
i know you're making wishes
for down the line

we're waiting on the weekend
as if we'll find some peace then
on down the line

you're making your advances
i think i like my chances
i'll hold the line

don't get so defensive
cause everything that ends is
still on the line

you're leaving here tonight
for no good reason
and no words to describe
it makes no difference
if i'm putting up a fight
or if i'm dead or alive
you're leaving here tonight

there's nothing I can say now
i'm like a dead volcano
just passing time

it's not enough to kiss you
i wish i could go with you
on down the line

you're leaving here tonight
for no good reason
and no words to describe
it makes no difference
if i'm putting up a fight
or if i'm dead or alive
you're leaving here tonight
you're leaving here tonight
she's leaving here tonight

it's not a rite of passage
just someone else's baggage

Ever gargle chopped glass or rock candy with lighter fluid? No? Weird. Aside from boasting a percussionist named Sexual Chocolate as well as a growing armada of similarly epic, devil-horned psych adventures worth checking out as soon as you possibly can, Long Beach's Crystal Antler even fuck with organ. Sort of like your favorite post-harcore bands from the 90s on acid. LOTS of acid.

And again, they've got a percussionist named Sexual Chocolate, which is exactly what my brother always asked to go by growing up. What a weird little dude.

Sounds Like: The Stooges, Awesome Color, Blood Brothers, Comets on Fire

Spaceland’s RCRD LBL blog have just released an awesome live track of their homie Liam Finn performing his song “Second Chance”, which they recorded super early in the man’s career. Now solidly established, this song shows a raw, rough side of Liam many may have not encountered before. The song has a definite sense of urgency to it, like Ted Leo pouring his heart out to his favorite Clash records. When the drums kick in at about 4:25 (spoiler alter!) things get seriously next level. Spaceland have a long and illustrious history with Liam, so head over to their blog to check out the video for “Second Chance” and more info on Liam’s album I’ll Be Lightening.

Sounds like: Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Joe Strummer

Pivot - In The Blood - Video Premiere

Posted 5/14/2008 1:03 PM by warp

Tags: warp, rock, guts, blood

Warp's latest (and first Australian) signing, Pivot, are here with a new music video that you might not see broadcast during prime-time hours. Shark attacks, blood and guts, and puppetry, all set to ominous synth drones and propelled by a driving bassline, promise that Pivot isn't really utilizing the subtle approach. If the promise of gore hasn't enticed you, did I mention that the director fractured his shoulder and covered his house in blood for the shoot? That's pretty hardcore. Pivot's "In The Blood" EP will be released on May 19th - keep a lookout on warpmart, bleep, and your local record store. Enjoy the premiere of Pivot's "In The Blood":

I used to be a huge sissy. Last December the almighty Mudhoney came to New York to play their classic album Superfuzz Bigmuff (20th Anniversary re-release and new album, Lucky Ones, due 5/20) at Bowery Ballroom and throughout their most gnarly of sets, a large pit consumed much of the floor just in front of the stage. Somehow I've been been able to avoid moshing most of my life, but there was a moment (and it could have been the many man sodas that night) during "Here Comes Sickness" where I decided it was time to put some hair on my chest and finally check things out. Everything was going really well until my sneaker caught a slick spot on the hardwood and I hit the deck preeeeetty hard. A dude helped me up right away, looked me in the eye and said, "You are wearing the most amazing windbreaker I have ever seen." Bros forever and sissy no more.

I'd like to believe that moment is distilled in all of these tracks. I'm so excited to post them.

Sounds Like: Mudhoney

VIDEO THRWBCK: The Cure - A Forest (Live in Amsterdam) (1980)

We had such a rainy, crappy weekend indoors that we self-inflicted a total Cure-in and listened to loads of their records on repeat. Not that it was punishment, as more often than not Mr. Smith & Co made the most brilliantly depressing pop singles of the '80s (though have you ever listened to "Hand On Your Heart" by Kylie? What a downer, right?). Anyway, here's a clip of the Cure doing one of our favorite songs, "A Forest", live in Amsterdam in 1980.
