RCRD THRWBCK: Gossip - Yr Mangled Heart (Live)

Welcome to the sixth RCRD THRWBCK, where each weekend a different editor will select a record from our virtual stacks that they deem worthy for reevaluation and/or reintroduction.

Back in the day, before I had the benefits of working here, I’d blow all my cash on music. And I mean all of it. I never did the stealing MP3 thing, and I was too daft to know where to get the good stuff legally (insert shameless RCRD LBL promo here). Anyway, one of my favorite paid-for tunes of all time is this live version of Gossip’s “Yr Mangled Heart.” Everything about it feels so primal, and so important. Here, Beth Ditto the human breathlessly proclaims, “I’m feeling it,” before the blazing riff explodes, and out comes Beth Ditto the super-hero: radiating her staggering emotion, her massive power, her unbelievable voice. Sure, I could have downloaded it for free here (had I known), but I’m glad I paid, because to me, this one is priceless.

RCRD THRWBCK: Animal Collective - Summertime Clothes (Dam-Funk Remix)

Welcome to the fifth RCRD THRWBCK, where each weekend a different editor will select a record from our virtual stacks that they deem worthy for reevaluation and/or reintroduction.

Confession that is now somewhat embarassing to admit: this barely-a-year-old remix was my first introduction to Dam-Funk. Can't be up on everything all the time, and if you're going to not know someone, it might as well be someone a band as continually weird-referencing as Animal Collective works with. Anyway. At first, I hated it, because it's not overdosing on Vitamin D/ring-around-the-rosy vibes like the original. It also has no dynamics. This, I eventually realized, was kind of the point–Dam is just trying to hold down one of the most weightless bands in existence. If Animal Collective is a hot air balloon (which they are, frequently), Dam-Funk and his drum machines are the ropes and stakes keeping it grounded. And there's power inherent to that restraint, even if it's not made obvious by skull-crushing kick drums and varying levels of intensity. Letting it all hang out like that would be distasteful. And Dam-Funk, if anything, is a beacon of taste.

RCRD THRWBCK: Florence And The Machine - You've Got The Love (The xx Remix)

Welcome to the fourth RCRD THRWBCK, where each weekend a different editor will select a record from our virtual stacks that they deem worthy for reevaluation and/or reintroduction.

Way back, in the stoned ages of September 2009, when we were still feeling the first wave of what was growing into an overwhelming crush on The xx, when "Crystalised" had just begun to cling to our bones like calcium, Jamie of The xx made his first step into what could become his post-xx career with this remix of Florence And The Machine's "You've Got the Love." Thing is, it's not a remix but a complete transformation, a dis-assembling and a blind re-construction–Jamie had created a monster. And maybe back then it was a surprise that this kid, only twenty-something, had the depth and vision to not only master his own gloomy R&B demons but those of bass and dubstep too. History has shown us that there's more to Jamie of The xx than that sultry baritone and bass slapping. After his bananas bass mix for Collette, remixes like this start to make a bit more sense, but we'll always remember our first time, like our first kiss, first mosh pit, first tinnitus, and first vinyl purchase.

Welcome to the third RCRD THRWBCK, where each weekend a different editor will select a record from our virtual stacks that they deem worthy for reevaluation and/or reintroduction.

Across the world, ten new lo-fi bands will have formed by the time you reach the end of this sentence. Given that, it's easy to forget what a breath of fresh air No Age were when they first came clattering into earshot. Released in 2007, "Neck Escaper" was something of an early anthem for the duo and its gallant swing endures even if Randy Randall and Dean Spunt now prefer to make lusher, more overwhelming noises together.

RCRD THRWBCK: Terry Lynn and Johan Hugo - Jamaican Girls

Welcome to the second RCRD THRWBCK, where each weekend a different editor will select a record from our virtual stacks that they deem worthy for reevaluation and/or reintroduction.

I started at RCRD LBL a little under a year ago, and summer was upon us in all its oppressive awesomeness when Monsieur Duke posted this track. I remember thinking—how in the hell did Terry Lynn and Johan Hugo make the theme song of Fletch into such a banging Jamaican jam? The truth can be found here, but for what it’s worth, it’s my pleasure to pass along the first song that made me realize RCRD LBL was where everything I needed was there for the snatching. When you get your grubby little hands on mpfrees like these, how can you be anything but grateful? Ya’ll are gonna have a good BBQ if you kick it off with this. And, with that, I’m out to find my own.

RCRD THRWBCK: The Bronx - Young Bloods

Welcome to the first RCRD THRWBCK, where each weekend a different editor will select a record from our virtual stacks that they deem worthy for reevaluation and/or reintroduction.

The Bronx are kind of the George Foremans of California punk–they've named every one of their children–sorry, albums–after themselves. Some might call that a lack of creativity, I call it a way to avoid overwrought album titles and force a premonition-free listen. I also call that having balls. You will hear them in "Young Bloods" (originally posted in October of 2008), an exhaustively fast, undeniably catchy, head-smacking, three-minute master class in How To Write A Punk Song That People Can Sing Along To Without Feeling Like A Dummy. Also worth your time: their Mariachi alter-ego.
