It looks like experimental post punk band Abe Vigoda are finally leaving their hallowed ground of LA punk venue The Smell and bringing their show over to the East Coast. Brooklyn Vegan reports that they are playing a Todd P showcase at the Silent Barn tomorrow, so make sure to come out and get your knee jerk on. Who knows when they’ll be back…

We’re so high off of yesterday’s Futureheads excusive that we decided to make the stream of the live version of “Beginning of the Twist” available for download! It’s so brutal and energetic, it’s making us long to see the ‘Heads in concert again. The last time we saw them was during the News and Tributes tour at Webster Hall here in NYC, and although that was awesome, it was nothing compared to their first NYC show at the Canal Room (yes, the Canal Room) in late 2004. It might have been the single loudest show we’ve every been to, and when they busted out “House of Love” (dedicated to the “sensual temptress” Kate Bush) the entire place went ape. We wonder how the new songs will fare in a live setting? The MP3 is just a taste, so we’ll have to check it out for ourselves…

Here’s the Atephoald remix of “Beginning of the Twist” we posted yesterday:

Say hello to the newest RCRD LBL signings: NYC epic rock four-piece ALOKE. ALOKE (that's all caps, natch) just finished up recording their new album, What a Sight It Shines at Night with legendary alt. rock producer Steve Albini, so you know it’s going to be amazing. The opening bars of “Head on a String” are even strongly reminiscent of the Albini’s old cohorts the Pixies, with a little post-millennial epic prog thrown in for good measure. You’ll be seeing a lot of these guys ‘round these parts soon, so check out these two tracks from What a Sight… and see why we’re geeked out for this band to join our roster.

Sounds like: The Pixies, Muse, Led Zeppelin

We were obsessed with The Futureheads’ debut self-titled album when it first came out way back in 2004—the brilliant blend of the Jam bashing out Devo songs was too much for our minds to handle. We saw them live at every possible opportunity, and we’re pretty sure we wore out the CD within the first few months of owning it (let’s not even talk about their “Hounds of Love” cover… so good). Then came, to many people’s confusion, News and Tributes: a record not without its merits, but critically panned for not having the same immediate joy buzz as the debut. It seemed like all might be done for the Futureheads at that point—dropped from their label 679, they retreated to their ranks and rebuilt their empire anew. They created their own label (Nul Records) and are now releasing their third record, the highly anticipated This Is Not The World, with its incendiary lead single “The Beginning of the Twist”, a totally brutal return to form. The angular guitars, the powerful backing vocals, the raw, fun energy of the ‘Heads of yore... it’s all here. Yeah, they’re back.

Today we have two awesome Futureheads exclusives: a live version of “The Beginning of the Twist” and a remix by UK electro producer Atephoald.

DOWNLOAD: The Blacks - Raincoat

The innocent name “Raincoat,” barely disguises the bold, bad-ass punk by San Francisco's The Blacks. From the album Nom De Guerre, “Raincoat” is tethered together with a heavily-loaded electric guitar hook- brash enough for a Porche race on Italian cliffs. But the vocals crawl in, slithering (keep in mind, vocalist Luisa Black has the charisma of Karen O). You start to succumb. By the time the deep drum bridge beats down, you are rendered numb and salivating. If there was an apple involved, by then you would have demolished it all to the core and kissed the snake in thanks.

ATTN World: our dear bros White Denim just cut a raging four song session for the always excellent Daytrotter site. We were rather flattered that the only previously released song they played, "Paint Sliver Gold", was off of their RCRD LBL-exclusive EP (grab it below.) The unreleased jams are fantastic too (natch) so be sure to head over to DT to load up on some new tunes from our favorite power trio. Then get ready to hear these guys detonate the internet with their awesomeness.

VIDEO THRWBCK: The Libertines - What A Waster (Live at CBGB's 2003)

I remember buying the Libertines' first single—the double A side "What A Waster" b/w "I Get Along"—in November of 2002 at a small shop in the West Village called Rebel Rebel. At the time, the shop mostly sold old (’80s) indie pop and dance records geared toward the neighborhood's gay community's record buying tastes, but for some reason managed to get every brand new, hot UK rock single way before anyone else. They also sold vintage copies of The Face and NME. Anyways, this song is pretty much the best intro to a band you could hope for and it made me a fan of the Libs from day one. It crackles and swerves, makes abundant use of obscure British slang (what's a div?) and was a highlight of every show of theirs that I went to. Check out this pretty rare live version from CBGB's; I was there—true story.

VIDEO THRWBCK: Rocket From The Crypt - Sturdy Wrists (1992)

Posted 4/23/2008 6:52 AM by rcrd lbl

Much to my delight, the first Rocket From The Crypt song that turned up in a google video search was "Sturdy Wrists", the group's infinitely jam-able ode to [censored]. The thirty word background on Rocket is that they were from San Diego and played teeth grinding garage/punk/soul ten years before the Hives and that the band's leader Jon Reiss was a former member of Drive Like Jehu and went on to be in Hot Snakes. Anyways, I remember loving this band right about the time I started wearing black button up shirts and listening to Nation Of Ulysses.

Just last week I played this track three times back to back to back on the subway. Anyways, the chorus pretty much sums this song up: "when you're done/you gotta once more".

PS - sorry for Prodigy/Dial Up modem-era video quality, although I guess it does add to the "near-vintage" feel of the song
