PREMIERE: Vietnam - Kitchen Kongas

(Photo: David Black)

Ah, the almighty Vietnam – doctors of the most fried-out side of psychedelia, experts at garbled, vomited sermons and widescreen scientists of real-deal rock 'n' roll that doesn't hide behind anything other than its majestic intentions. Yes, Michael Gerner is back with a new single, "Kitchen Kongas," that absolutely rips, commanding you to 'walk with the devil' and featuring a fiery vamp, battering-ram hand drums and a harmonica solo that might make you freak the hell out. You can grab the 7-inch now and find this one as part of the suitably epic new album an A.merican D.ream on February 26 via Mexican Summer.

In a land where tambourines sound like rattlesnakes and electric guitar reprises are perfect soundtracks to a slow-speed race between a greaser and an outlaw, Gringo Star’s gritty rock rules supreme. This clap-happy Southern-rock-influenced psych-rock band is from Atlanta, Georgia. The dudes never purported to be politically correct, (see band name and thank The Beatles), but regardless, we dig their style and their unaffected DIY ask-questions-later attitude.

SOUNDS LIKE: Blitzen Trapper, Band of Horses, The Kinks
