The Rentals' Songs About Time project produced a lot of content–three-hundred and sixty-five days of photography, fifty-two weeks of film, and four albums of music. Only a fraction of that music was actually released, the rest was saved for limited-edition box sets that are now available from their website (you'll have to click for what's included; it's too much to list here). "Honey Life" was one of the unreleased cuts, a slow, pillow-soft pop song about being tired that doesn't sound tired. It just sounds like the long-overdue return to a room that's exactly the way you left it. Taking comfort in the familiar and all that.

“On the Road” has the casual, off-handed vibe of a power-pop song you’d invent in the shower if you had dreams of being out on the road. Since it’s being sung by Turbo Fruit tour monster Jonas Stein, he’s able to mix that love of being out there with a smelly-dude’s genuine desire to, like, take a shower and sleep in his own bed. Turbo Fruits second album, Echo Kid, comes out today on Fat Possum — nab this power-pop gem below and find two more free tunes on offer here. Then jump the gap to find the Turbo Fruits' gig with Monotonix that's closest to you — tour starts tonight in Memphis. On the road again…

When you love pop music the way Robert Schneider does, restraint would only get in the way. Take “Go!,” a paean to leaving from his band the Apples in stereo’s upcoming greatest-hits package, #1 Hits Explosion (a new, perhaps more modestly named studio album is in the oven). It’s like one enormous grinning hook spread over three minutes, with horns and “doo doo doo” background vocals fighting for intrasong supremacy, and a breakdown that’s hairy enough to make you kind of want to hear an entire album of that stuff at some point.

From Atlanta comes yet another slice of sweetness: combining the golden power pop of 1970s mainstays like Modern Lovers or even Elvis Costello, Gentleman Jesse and His Men put out one of the most slept-on records of the year. "You Don't Have To (If You Don't Want To) comes correct from that self-titled debut and it's a big chorus, grab-you-by-the-throat-in-the-best-possible-way kind of guitar jam. Hook. Craftsmanship.
