Happy Birthday, RCRD LBL. In your honor, Loren and I have crept from the back rooms again to unleash another Production Team Mix. Just like the one before it, Mix #2 is eleven hand-picked tracks from our back catalog most worthy of another spin. All the tracks are available for download, so grab 'em, enjoy 'em, and join us in beginnings of our celebratory week for RCRD LBL.
At first listen, this track from venerable noise/rockers Deerhoof has a bit of an indie flair to it, but as you cup your hands over your headphones and listen a bit closer, the sound becomes harder to categorize. With a seemingly haphazard guitar string being plucked in the background that almost conflicts with the rest of the melody, "Offend Maggie" vibes like a toned down The Go! Team track. However you put it though, it's a catchy, almost-pop tune that ends so suddenly it leaves you craving more. So, to quench that undeniable thirst, we're also offering "Chandelier Searchlight", an equally light and popish song with a sort-of Big Band undertone and lyrics that alternate between Japanese and English. Enjoy!
Sounds like: The Go! Team, Mates of State, Kiiiiiii
Before Elliot Stabler and Olivia Benson. Before Axel Foley. Hell, before Sgt. Joe Friday, there were Cochese, Bobby "The Rookie", and "The Chief". Okay, maybe not before Friday, but in an almost satirical version of all those detective shows, "Sabotage" stands as one of my top ten fave videos for its originality as a hip-hop video and well done execution. A well deserved golf-clap for Ad-Rock, MCA, and Mike D. Enjoy!
With over 1,000 artists among our vast musical library, filtering through it all can be quite a hefty task. So, Loren and I (collectively known as the Production team) have put together, what we call, the “Production Team Mix”. Eleven boss tracks from our back catalog for your enjoyment, presented in our easily digestible playlist widget.
You've probably never chilled on the beaches of another planet, overlooking the vast space that is the Milky Way Galaxy, enjoying the fact that it's just you, your thoughts, and the stars. Chances are, you probably never will either. However, thanks to Flying Lotus’ remix of Reefer’s “Let It Go” you can at least imagine you can. Reefer is one-half Nick Thorburn (of Islands, The Unicorns fame) and one-half Daddy Kev, and their combined vibe is pure down-tempo, hip-hop goodness. Their debut album—the self-titled Reefer, available Oct. 14 (via Alpha Pup)—was composed on the Maui shorelines which not only explains the tropical undertones, but also the innocuous Ecco the Dolphin sample used.
There is no doubt in our minds that director Chris Cunningham is a disturbed individual. However, when you are comparing his visual aesthetic to the auditory styling of Richard D. James a.k.a. Aphex Twin, it's 1. hard to figure which of the two is more mad than genius, and 2. easy to see why they work so well together. “Come to Daddy” epitomizes both those points, merging the IDM-signature we’ve come to associate to James with pelvic-thrusting "children". And, while we think it all makes for a great video, we can't say that it doesn't leave us a bit concerned for all the elderly women of the world.
