MIX: Keith Fullerton Whitman - Greatest Hits

Posted by Carter Maness

Tags: mixes, albums, ambient, drone

On this 12-hour mix collection entitled Greatest Hits, Keith Fullerton Whitman takes a foggy, languid trip through his personal history and its relationship to pop music. The process is both simple and unique as the ambient master takes particular songs from his youth and passes them through a series of generators to create airy aural memories – a dense, sprawling nostalgia trip created over ten years of recording and processing.

MIX: Atoms For Peace - BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix

Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich have stepped into the BBC Essential Mix chamber where electronic influence is wielded like a two-hour weapon. The result? My favorite mix of 2013 thus far. Step within for unreleased Radiohead and Atoms For Peace, as well as hypnotic appearances from Aphex Twin, DOOM and all those other cool artists that tickle Yorke's wispy Brit beard.

Longtime RCRD LBL favorite Kingdom has been known to drop a wild mix. Add Diplo's radio show as a platform, and the Brooklyn DJ/producer most definitely comes correct in this hour-long sojourn that starts with a Beyoncé bootleg, hits a few originals and drops in on everything from Girl Unit and Dolla to Fatima Al Qadiri.

PLAYLIST: Feelin' All Y2K Again

The 'Millennial' generation has been lauded as prematurely-nostalgic adult children that are fond of primitive Internet art, VHS tapes, photo filters and platform tennis shoes. Whether or not this is the case, we’ve grown-up and pirated all kinds of production software in order to flood the Internet with homages to those most beloved relics of our recent childhoods.

Personally, I have zero qualms admitting that a not-insignificant (OK, so maybe some qualms) percentage of the tracks I consume on a daily basis are just remixes of songs I liked in middle school. But I’m an adult now, so más bass, por favor.

This list is hardly exhaustive, but here are a few standout millennium-era remixes from 2012.
