Sally Shapiro: Remix Romance Vol. 2

sally shapiro

If topsy-turvy weather and late fight backs in Euro 2008 aren't exciting enough, yesterday saw the iTunes release of Sally Shapiro: Remix Romance Vol. 2! It contains remixes by Dntel, The Russian Futurists, Solvent and Alexander Robotnick and can be purchased here.

If you're unfamiliar with her 2006 Disco Romance album or previous Paper Bag Records release, Remix Romance Vol. 1, Sally Shapiro's music is best described as 80s Eurobeat and Italo disco. It's the perfect remedy to hot weather so crack open a cold one, turn the music up a notch and get ready for summer...

First off, let's clarify that Miami Horror is not from Miami (try Melbourne, Australia) and doesn't craft the sort of mask-wearing, ferocious banger Djing that you'd expect with a name like "Horror." Instead, this track "Make You Mine" incorporates exotic Congo drums, '80s flute effects, scintillating Italo disco beats, and a white-suited Miami Vice mood theme. Take the '80s shimmer of Giorgio Moroder, mix it with faster-paced Phil Oakley beats, and add a dash of Chromeo with their testosterone dialed way down. Did we mention the brains behind the project is 22 year old Benjamin Plant?  We'll be welcoming him with open arms in Austin this week, where he'll be gearing up with native Texan soundmaster Vega; after all, if this song is any indication, Miami Horror's jams will be essential to us surviving the week long taco and margarita hangovers.

Sounds like: Phil Oakley, Giorgio Moroder, Chromeo, Van She, Cut Copy, Kavinsky

From Italo disco to well, just disco, Montreal remixers CFCF have mutated Sally Shapiro’s “Time To Let Go” from crystalline Nordic pop to ‘80s R&B throwback jam, and it’s amazing. Who knew that the reigning princess of ice-cool electro pop could sound so funky… so sexy? Not that Sally’s not a pretty lady, but there’s something about this remix that casts away the untouchable aura surrounding Disco Romance and gives it a warm, get-down-on-the-dancefloor feeling. We’ve said it before, but there are few artists out there at the moment with whom we are continually pleased, and Sally is definitely one of them. A+.

Sounds like: Little Boots, Chromeo, Michael Jackson

Sally Shapiro Cools You

So I believe its the start of summer when people start complaining about how hot it is, and that it's soooo humid. Babies! I say. I personally love summer...less clothes to wear, more patios to drink at and ROOF TOP PARTIES!!!!

Now it's the afternoon as I type this and I am about to head out for an iced cool coffee somewhere to celebrate this week's release on iTunes of the Sally Shapiro Remix Romance Vol.2. Which you can purchase here. I think it's icey chill suits me perfectly to give me cool thoughts as sweat drips down my brow. It'll will prep me up nicely for the start of summer party season.

Please enjoy one of the top cuts from the album in CFCF's remix of Time To Let Go.

EXCLUSIVE STREAM: Sally Shapiro - Jackie Junior (Junior Boys remix)

There are many things we love in this world, but more specifically, two of those things are Swedish Italo disco queen Sally Shapiro and Canadian bedroom rockers Junior Boys. So you can imagine our joy when the two are joined in matrimony under the sanctity of music: meaning that we have an exclusive stream of the Junior Boys remix of “Jackie Junior”, which is in turn a version of “Jackie Jackie” a Sally song that we’ve played around the office decidedly to death for the past year, and still love it. What Junior Boys have done is take the Italo essence of the tune and infuse it with their own singular brand of laid-back soft electro. Needless to say, this is for the bedroom dancers.

Stream: Sally Shapiro - Jackie Junior (Junior Boys remix)

This stream come courtesy of Paper Bag records, who (news break!) are about to officially join the RCRD LBL family as a partner label! It’s all coming soon, so consider this a taste of what’s to come. If you’re into Sally, she’s just about to kick off her DJ tour with a date tonight at the Plug Awards, and tomorrow at the Mercury Lounge. Check out her MySpace for more info!

FEATURED: Italians Do It Better

We know we've raved about italo disco on this blog before, but we can't help but be excited about it. It's always cool when a semi-obscure genre gets a facelift from competent musicians, and Lord knows there's enough italo material floating around the ether to fuel like, six revivals (holler Heather Parisi!). Obviously the kings of the new italo scene are the guys at the label Italians Do It Better, who have recently released records from bands like Chromatics, Glass Candy and Professor Genius. We've included a link to Gorilla vs. Bear, who just did a piece on the entire label and its output. Dig in.
