EXCLUSIVE CMJ DOWNLOAD: Jahdan Blakkamoore - She Said (feat. 77Klash)

Posted 10/22/2009 10:49 AM by Hillary Kaylor

Tags: grime, dancehall, reggae, hip hop, CMJ

77Klash introduced grime to the Jahdan Blakkamoore party, so the story goes, but it’s tough to gauge who’s bringing more to “She Said.” Jah’s golden voice breezily sweeps the floor, allowing 77Klash’s riddim jaunts to grit-pop even more against one lone basement beat. The girls seem to be asking a lot of the Brooklyn boys, but it’s all massively movable.  Hit up Dutty Artz for all the details on how Jahdan, Blitz and more are going to ease us out of this CMJ marathon with a killer performance and closing party. Buy tickets right here and catch the tunes on Buzzrock Warrior out now.

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Roll Deep - Eskimo

Posted 10/22/2009 10:19 AM by Kev Kharas

This is early, early, early grime, but "Eskimo" still sounds righteous and alien after almost a decade's worth of plays, edits and imitators. Roll Deep may lack a bit of bite now that their star players have gone onto bigger and better (Dizzee Rascal and Tinchy Stryder have long flown the nest, while even founding duo Wiley and Flow Dan have forged more impressive paths elsewhere) but this, from two years before Dizzee's debut album was released, is a bracing reminder that the world would sound very different right now if it weren't for Roll Deep - listen to this mix by London's slather-worthy newcomer Jam City for proof of that. Chart their influence in full on Street Anthems, a retrospective of greatest hits and unheard gems out this week through Southern.

Sounds Like: east London

Vampires are everywhere. Not, like, physically everywhere - that'd be alarming, but culturally their stock's never been richer: True Blood, Let the Right One In, Thirst, Twilight, Vampire Weekend... Why, though? Why the recent resurgence? I've read articles today that have linked the phenomenon to the recession, 9/11 and the latent urges of straight, young women who long to have sex with gay men. Whatever the logic behind it, these draculas are almost always portrayed as misunderstood heroes, but Flow Dan ain't having it - he's after them in "Vurderas", making prey of them at the plaza while thunder booms and lightning crashes, all over the top of an old reggae sample. More fire! Sweet death to the bloodsucker scum! Wait, what? Immortal?!

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Detboi - Get Low

Posted 10/12/2009 10:45 AM by Kev Kharas

Tags: club, grime, electro

If rave is excess, then Detboi's doing well: "Get Low" jamming every raver cliche known to man into - what? - just over four minutes. That's two decades or so of history, neatly surmised in sirens, whistles, smackdown syths, the amen break and an anonymous man instructing everyone to kneel down. I think that's what "Get Low" means, anyway - never seen no limbo pole in the clurrrb. Get this and more on Herve's new Cheap Thrills label comp, out now.

Sounds Like: A1 Bassline, Crookers, Fingers INC

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Various Production - MKC

Various Production are as evasive a duo as their name suggests, "MKC" flexing muscular between the eager synths of UK funky, the stumbling percussion of the 'ardkore avant-garde ('wonky' to you, perhaps) and flaring grime aggro. It's aggro, actually, that dominates the track, MC chatter prevailing over funky's usually more feminine charms, smooth grooves sacrificed for cock-of-the-walk prancing.

Sounds Like: KIG, Starkey, Roska

Crooner of the Dutty Artz fam and recent Major Lazer collaborator Jahdan Blakkamoore finally has his debut album, Buzzrock Warrior, in the can; now all it has to do come out in September via !K7 imprint Gold Dust Media and he will, presumably, take over the world with his honeycomb pipes. Before all that, dude will release a new mixtape called Bazooka Shot, source of this tune with synths like Snoopy ears and production from Matt Shadetek and DJ /rupture.

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Lethal Bizzle - Go Hard (Featuring Donaeo) (DJ Raph Remix)

Posted 6/22/2009 12:45 PM by Kev Kharas

Tags: balkan, hip-hop, funky, grime

I don't know what Lethal Bizzle's doing here, but it's definitely keeping my attention, which is what you'd imagine the man wants as he gets ready to flog his forthcoming third album. To be fair the original cut of "Go Hard" - a more dedicated UK funky clapper - is nowhere near as schizoid as this DJ Raph remix, which tries to cram so much into itself - grime, funky, old-skool house, what sounds like a Balkan string-section - that the impression is of a bar rep manically trying to recruit the drunken hordes to some dive on an infamous Balearic strip, all musical tribes greeted equally with free shots of absurdly strong booze and endless, blatant groping.

Sounds Like: Apple, Deee-Lite, DJ Luck & MC Neat

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Herve - Ghetto Bass Minimix + Herve - Jungle Steppers (feat. The Count Of Monte Cristal)

Posted 2/19/2009 11:20 AM by Kev Kharas

Tags: grime, drum n bass, dubstep, electro, club, bassline, house

Released into the wild this week, Ghetto Bass is being billed as Hervé's "inaugural" mix compilation. It's an interesting choice of word - an inauguration comes, of course, at the beginning of a leader's reign, a traditional ceremony used to herald a new direction. A 2-CD, 35-track romp through the last 20 years of bass music - the kind heard surging through British clubland in particular - the compilation also sounds like the best house parties you've ever been to coalescing into one unified moment of delirious abandon, cutting a path backwards through bassline, dubstep, grime, electro, drum n' bass and house. To this end, dance heroes like Zomby, Benga, Justice and The Chemical Brothers are caught in the mix, but cuts from guitar-wielding outfits like The Kills and Bloc Party are also co-opted, re-shaped, hammered into dance floor eligibility.

RCRD LBL has a twenty minute teaser for your glad ears, Ghetto Bass minimixed, as well as a track, "Jungle Steppers", pulled fully-formed from the record. Like we said, it's out now, so check it.

Sounds Like: an English Girl Talk, millionaire pirate radio, Plastician

DOWNLOAD: Filastine - Hungry Ghosts (feat. Wire MC & ECD)

Tags: experimental, electronic, grime

Another track here from the globetrotting Filastine, a Barcelona-based producer who's got a genre-thrwarting new album called Dirty Bomb coming out on dj /Rupture's Soot label. "Hungry Ghosts" sounds like a grime track wrapped in a beach towel of big bassbin thump and bugged by hovering yellowjacket hi-hats.  They don't sting, though. Dirty Bomb hits stores February 17.

Sounds like: DJ Signify, dj /Rupture, Zomby

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Lady Sovereign - I Got You Dancing (Medasyn Dub Remix)

Posted 1/19/2009 11:28 AM by Faith-Ann Young

Tags: electronic, grime, dub

You've probably heard by now the precocious Brit grime MC Lady Sovereign is releasing a record in April. After her broke-b*tchin' breakdown at Studio B in 2007, we've been über-curious about her comeback and since that we're not ones to sit twiddling our thumbs, we got hold of an exclusive NEW remix of "I Got You Dancing" fresh off her upcoming album Jigsaw, which has been tweaked by her producer Medasyn. We gotta say, if this track any indication, Lady S. is gonna pound into head and hypnotize you senseless in 2009. The fat bassline sounds like a Transformer squashed it until Medasyn breathed life back into it with a heavy-weight, fuzzed-out synth. Robotic lyrics and Bitcrusher-distorted rhythms add kick and punch. As Lady Sov. says, "Jump in."

Sounds Like: Lady Gaga, Menta, Dizzee Rascal,Justice
