EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: thecocknbullkid - Clean Apart

Posted 6/18/2009 11:07 AM by Kev Kharas

Tags: electro-pop

If you've always quite liked Metronomy, Late Of The Pier and the rest of London's electro-pop royalty but yearned for someone who can hit the high notes without sounding throttled, look no further than thecocknbullkid for your latest wired fix. Anita Blay's recorded output to date has been a melange of R&B, electroclash and soul with the odd bit of grime bite, but "Clean Apart" plays it straighter: slinky pop bulletins dodging squelchy swamp bass and treacherous drum cuts with a poise rare among 'indie' chart hopefuls. The track features on thecocknbullkid's Querelle EP, out August 4th through IAMSOUND.

Sounds Like: Late Of The Pier, Outkast, Britney Spears

Robyn's in love with a robot. What does that mean? Not a great deal, to be honest, as the wretched, wiry thing refuses to call her back. You could say that their love affair has crashed and burned. Or that Robyn has been data dumped. Or that these puns are tedious. You'd be right of course, but that's not something that should be held against hairy Norwegian pair Royksopp or Parisian remixers Chateau Marmont, who team up here to back Robyn's vocoded yelps with a meaty slab of electro-pop that veers remarkably close to something by Kylie Minogue or Britney Spears' ubiquitous "Womanizer". Zip it up!

Sounds Like: Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue, Simian Mobile Disco

Look at that photograph. Eyebrows down, arms crossed, jaw outstretched. It's meant to put across a singular and important message - that Terry Lynn is not one to f*ck around. Watch this video for proof. Uselessly huge knives! Shiny guns! Barking dogs! The Kingston madam's electro dancehall is similarly ruthless in its taking and realigning of your pulse, the four-to-the-floor house refits in wait below hardwiring your feet to stomp, shoulders to rock. Get militant with Terry tonight, Londoners - she's at YoYo over in Notting Hill this evening.

Sounds Like: Daft Punk, Crystal Castles, Robyn S - "Show Me Love (2008)"

Theoretical Girl is South London's modern Edie Sedgwick if Edie actually made good music (rather than mostly just inspired it). A phenomenon that began as an 8-track in a bedroom, Theoretical Girl (i.e. Amy Turnnidge) is one of the brand-spankin' new foreign gems to see at this year's SXSW, before her name becomes a bloggeratti mainstay. In the track below, her voice angelically hovers over hypnotic electro-pop beats.

Sounds Like: Ipso Facto, PJ Harvey

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: And Then There Were None - Hide And Seek (Imogen Heap Cover)

Take your favorite ethereal Imogen Heap ode, "Hide & Seek." Add edgy, synth-heavy dance beats and male vocals. Presto. This track will burst you out of your winter cocoon and tempt you to rave on a club rooftop. While electro-dance may not seem like a likely route for And Then There Were None, whose frontman Matt Rhoades had metal DIY tendencies, Rhoades explains, “Eventually I ran out of ideas for writing metal music, and began to write what came more naturally. To me, dance music is positive, and still incredibly emotionally based. There are no rules or norms and this allowed me more creative freedom in the writing process." Though this Imogen Heap Cover is an infectious warm-up, we'll have to wait till Feb. 24th when their debut album is released under Tooth & Nail Records for the real verdict. Then again, if The Killers carved out "Human," who's to say a former metalcore can't master dancable electro-pop?

Sounds Like: Imogen Heap, Electric Valentine, Big City Kids

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Boy Crisis - L'Homme

With the pink slips falling from the sky like confetti, the only thing really left to do is rock ourselves silly like Grace Jones sandwiching Prince in the corner of Studio 54. Well, luck for us, Boy Crisis' newest output is the Viagra of electro-pop, swirling together shimmery Italo disco, Michael Jackson's 'Thriller'-esque synths, and LCD Soundsystem's electro bass & drum machine into solid dance-party gold. Imagine Chromeo high on opiates in Paris making frisky with disco-obsessed James Murphy. Oh and that chick whispering orgasmic, sweet Franglaise nothings on the track? That's Caroline Polachek from Chairlift......................Ba oui, c'est dope!

WORD: For you kids in the UK, Boy Crisis are releasing of the limited-edition "L'Homme" 7-inch under Chess Club Records so head to Rough Trade and bust out those fancy pocketbooks.

Nelson is rock formatted from the dance floor. Birthed from heavy shoe gaze rock; buttressed by gauzy power chords. But unlike most contemporary rock jams (verse-chorus-bridge-oh-my), their songs undulate and warp ala prog rock and build progressively ala 1980s French electronic house. Add clashing cymbals, pedal-heavy guitar riffing, and gutsy bass-driven backing tracks? You've got a similar strain of electro-pop as The Midnight Juggernauts and Cut Copy. It's no surprise they are opening for other favorites of ours, These New Puritans and Zombie Zombie. After all, it's music that pulses as easily through a 1,000 person dance tent in the desert as in your headphones.

Video: The Bird And The Bee Dance Politely

As the Bird and the Bee, Inara George and Greg Kurstin have been steadily releasing some really great jazzy-indie-electro-pop over the past couple of years.  Their most recent EP, Please Clap Your Hands (Bluenote), is fun, sexy, and undeniably dancy.  One of the highlights of the record is “The Polite Dance Song”, a refined number courteously imploring the listener to engage in some naughty horizontal dancing.  Eric Wareheim, of Tim and Eric Awesome Show fame, directed the video for this cheeky number. For those of you that aren’t familiar with Mr. Wareheim’s work, it can be loosely described as absurdist, over-the-top, and off-beat comedy (click here for a taste).

What we love about this video is how well the visual elements compliment the song itself.  All too often, music video directors go for style over substance and end up with a video that seems disconnected from the song it is supposed to embody. This video however, seems to take it’s storyline from the lyrics and the end result is one of the funnier videos we’ve seen in awhile.
