EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Comanechi - Rabbit Hole (Becoming Real Remix)

Posted 11/13/2009 10:03 AM by Kev Kharas

Tags: dubstep, wonky, electronica

Bubbling bong water. Screaming children. Duelling music boxes. A pregnant mouse. You can make hit records out of anything these days - listen close enough to Becoming Real's remix of "Rabbit Hole" and you'd probably be able to hear Amelia Earhart banging the holy grail against the rusted tin bonnet of an alien craft. If you long hard for guitars amid this nouveau sonic melee, find them in full force on Comanechi's enraged new album Crime Of Love.

Sounds Like: Zomby, Kid A-era Radiohead, Guido

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Sidney Samson - Riverside (Let's Go!) (feat. Wizard Sleeve) (Breakage Remix)

Posted 11/9/2009 1:22 PM by Kev Kharas

Tags: dubstep, club

Sidney Samson's "Riverside" has been attracting more interest online recently than a Rachel Bilson sex tape, as over 1.8 million MySpace plays attest. I'm willing to bet at least half of those hits, though, have come not from amorous spods but from Ibiza's returning party heads - the track basically owned the Balearic isle this summer, and as such you know it's gonna work best as one of those arms-in-the-air totems clubland occasionally whips up; like "Put Your Hands Up 4 Detroit" or "Day 'N' Nite". This Breakage remix doesn't stand in the way of that destiny; treating the original's buzzing hook to club-ready, dubstep throw downs.

Sounds like: Rusko, The Bug, Skream

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Freeland - Do You (PANTyRAiD Remix)

This exclusive PANTyRAiD flip of Freeland’s “Do You” is a twitchy tide-over for the track the duo (that’s MartyParty and Josh from The Glitch Mob) is currently tweaking just for us. Below, the boys let the electronica ride for forty seconds before shorting into their patented strain of crunk-dub, which twists and turns and stutters and bleeps for five minutes before it sighs softly home. Freeland's remix album drops digitally today, and you can stream PANTyRAiD's own The Sauce, before buying it proper at Beatport or here.

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: The Very Best - Julia (feat. Kano)

Posted 10/19/2009 12:04 PM by Kev Kharas

Tags: rap, pop, tropical, dubstep

Kano's verses here are notable for a few things - for one, it marks the phrase 'to Chris Brown somebody''s official passing into the public vocabulary. Really, though, that's a red herring; "Julia" a springy, jocular romp of a track that kind of sounds like what Madness or The Specials might if they'd just recorded their first album in 2009. Sunshine's never a surprise when The Very Best are around, obviously, but as October (!) draws towards a close that light and happiness is more welcome than ever, even if it does come over the strange, farting bass weight of a kind of toytown dubstep. Rather generously, there's also a remix by UK club kid JAYOU and an instrumental, so you can spit your own bars over the top and be just like Kano.

Sounds Like: Madness, JME, Vampire Weekend

DOWNLOAD: The Brown Acid - Try Humanity (Starkey & Zomby Remixes)

Belgium's The Brown Acid emailed us randomly, which is sometimes a hard way of getting a reply. But, you know what's a good way to get a reply? Call yourselves something like The Brown Acid. And come bearing an EP of twitchy electro-soul with flips from rising Philly rave caver Starkey and London's notoriously shadowy Zomby. Their versions of single "Try Humanity"–Starkey's a bionic, neon-touched dubstep reworking; Zomby's basically his version of a Baltimore club track–have little in common with the original, which you can stream on YouTube and buy on Monday through N.E.W.S. Records.

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Trojan Sound System - Love We A Go Spread (Trojan Sound System Special on Rusko's "Jahova")

Go outside. Look at the size of the building you've just vacated. Double it, square that, add three storeys less than you had to start with, take a sip of cola, double it again and this track will still be bigger than what you just built in your head. Trojan Sound System MCs Superfour and Jah Buck do the hard work here, grappling with Rusko's "Jahova" then beckoning Chuckie Banton in for a gimme of a chorus. Get on it - colossal, strident, humping bass weight.

Sounds Like: The Bug, Joker, Pendulum

We always sort of imagined the heavy, junglish side of dubstep's spectrum to be perfect End Of The World music, if only 'cause all the wobbling and lasering and cut-timing made for great intergalactic war visions. Now we know we weren't the only ones. This 12th Planet and Flinch remix of Baltimore club warrior Dave Nada appears on his new Apocalypse EP, out today through the good people at T&A. Rave War Of The Worlds style via the free MP3 and then go buy the full thing over at Amazon.

DOWNLOAD: Geiom - Flic En Flac

Such a colossal number of amazing producers are clambering from the UK's raver woodwork right now that it'd be more accurate to describe that 'woodwork' as a vast furniture forest alive with a gazillion potential clubland futures. Raised in rural England, Geiom's own sound is one pitched between the canopies and the coffee table; smooth, rich textures recalling the diamante bling of UK garage (gar-ij) while lurching low-end tells you to stand their nodding with your eyes closed (dub-step). Cue a confusion that leads your brains elsewhere - where? To "Flic En Flac", a glooping, curious soundstorm at the far end of UK dance music's ever-retreating horizon, helpfully dragged closer to you in London this Friday, October 9th, as Geiom's Berkane Sol label (together with the likemind heroes at Blunted Robots) annexes room three at Fabric.

Sounds Like: Kode9, Joker, Martyn

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Filthy Dukes - Tupac Robot Club Rock (Drums Of Death Remix)

Shows like Transformers and Power Rangers appeal to kids, 'cause the concept of 'em is easy to understand -  you gang together, you get bigger, you smash smaller shit up. Those programmes are essentially promises made to children that, yes, one day you'll be bigger and you'll be able to do whatever you want to whoever you want and as such they are responsible for myriad social ills, but also for this remix of "Tupac Robot Club Rock", which, as it title kinda suggests, sounds like clubland strapping all its sounds together and fucking shit up. Either that or Nathan Barley's wet nightmare. All you Filthy Dukes, behold the Drums Of Death.

Sounds Like: Outkast, Rusko, Herve

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Harmonia & Eno '76 - Sometimes in Autumn (Shackleton Remix)

Posted 9/24/2009 11:45 AM by Kev Kharas

Tags: ambient, kraut, dubstep, techno

I don't quite know how they pulled this one off. Amazing Sounds - run by the two gents from Allez-Allez - is a fledgling label. This is their first release. And it features Harmonia, Brian Eno and Shackleton. What?! The disbelief slackens somewhat when you hear what the dubstep-techno pioneer has done to "Sometimes in Autumn" - originally part of a 1976 collaboration between Eno and the kosmische masters, Shackleton's remix keeps ahold of the motorik beat and the psychedelic washes so beloved of Harmonia, but strips everything back. His presence on the track is felt in its emptied spaces - in the echo chamber of a chastened snare, for example - but he's respectful, keeping what needs to be kept so this feels less like a remix and more like the English-born, Berlin-based producer has been transported back in time to help birth something lurking, sullen and terrifyingly brilliant. At this point you wouldn't blame Amazing Sounds if they wanted to quit while they were (miles and miles) ahead, but after this comes out in November - on limited edition white vinyl and digital download - there's more gold: cuts promised from Dan Deacon, Luke Abbott and Hudson Mohawke. Keep an eye on things by signing up to their mailing list at the Amazing Sounds website.

Sounds Like: T++, Radiohead, Throbbing Gristle
