So Boogie Boarder dressed up as Lightning Bolt for their photo shoot, which sort of makes sense 'cause they sound like Lightning Bolt covering The Modern Lovers. "URSA" is from Pizza Hero (boy is their naming game on point), which is out now through Famous Class. Their next and final show is the Famous Class day party at Don Pedro's in Brooklyn on Saturday, should you be around.
77Klash introduced grime to the Jahdan Blakkamoore party, so the story goes, but it’s tough to gauge who’s bringing more to “She Said.” Jah’s golden voice breezily sweeps the floor, allowing 77Klash’s riddim jaunts to grit-pop even more against one lone basement beat. The girls seem to be asking a lot of the Brooklyn boys, but it’s all massively movable. Hit up Dutty Artz for all the details on how Jahdan, Blitz and more are going to ease us out of this CMJ marathon with a killer performance and closing party. Buy tickets right here and catch the tunes on Buzzrock Warriorout now.
Evan Voytasgoing in on the falsetto! Dude kinda sounds like Marc Bolan on a helium bender! That is always a good thing! Our favorite Angeleno one-man-band is in town for CMJ schlepping to a bunch of gigs and then spacing minds at said gigs with cosmic pop nuggets like this. He's got a pair left for tomorrow, we suggest you get familiar. Info after the break.
Darlings are like the best band that never grew up. They remind us of when Ice Cream trucks weren't annoying and video games were an acceptable interest. "Gorilla" includes a spelling chorus and NES keyboards and lands as the band do an easy but not overbearing three-show stint at CMJ that starts like right now (seriously). Info after le jump, musical anti-aging cream below.
Everyone has their "under the radar" CMJ picks or whatever, so let one of ours be Darwin Deez. Certainly not the only mustachioed Brooklyn musician with a bad haircut wandering around town this week, but probably the only one singing about ding-dong-ditching televangelists. "Radar Detector" is heavy on such juvenile highs, blithe as hell but hardly sloppy. Dude's playing twice on Friday–a Santos gig at 4:30PM and late night (2:00AM) at Glasslands–so you prime timers have no excuse.
Screaming Females is actually half-misleading–these New Brunswick basement heroes only have one female (singer/guitarist Marissa Paternoster), and she doesn't scream all the time. Sometimes she sings like Bob Mould and sometimes she shreds virtuosically. We are not exaggerating. "Bell" is probably the only under-three-minute garage-rock song to boast a guitar solo worthy of Steve Vai. They are playing the Mercury Lounge tonight and two Brooklyn shows on Saturday. Three guesses as to where that info lies.
We're not super familiar with Kordan, but knob-tweakers they are not. Their flip of ZAZA's "Arms Length" is brisk, urbane, and human (with claps and tambourines!), stuff that requires more than the usual click/drag/adjust/cash-the-paycheck. ZAZA also start their CMJ tour de force today with a twofer at Cake Shop, all that info's after the break.
Why is there so much love for YACHT? Because it feels like we could be in the band too if we just bum-rushed the stage! Chew on the dub version of “Waste of Time” and try dancing your way on in this Thursday, when YACHT bangs it out with in-house faves Holy Ghost! and more excellent acts at the DFA CMJ Party.
Ah, CMJ Music Marathon. How you yearly re-define the love/hate relationship, with your million bands in a million venues in five days. Brooklyn shamanic rock quartet Suckers have swam these waters before, and they'll do it again this year before self-releasing a new 7-inch in November. "Out On The Water" is from an earlier release and is every bit the flotilla jam its name implies. MP3's below, hit the break for all of their tour dates, for CMJ and beyond.
