Even though Teen Daze dropped "Let's Groove" as a New Year's Eve treat, I was legitimately shocked the first time I hit play. Usually lethargic, icy, reverberated and patient, "Let's Groove" basically says forget that noise and goes straight for the disco jugular. With sampled horns, bongos, a strong dance beat, it's an odd flip, yet pure-blooded dance music like this always gets the job done.
PREMIERE: Superhumanoids - Malta (Kisses Remix)

To those of us who came of age in the Tri-State, California still secretly emotes a kind of giddy ‘90s wondervibe—sex wax, straight teeth, agile guitars and neck tattoos. But then we hear ethereal bands like Superhumanoids and Kisses, and we're faced with how off we've been (stet the agile guitars). Twilight meets late-summer longing on today's sulking redo of “Malta,” and the dawning that this thing called chillwave has blown away all stereotypes with one woozy sigh. Californians: they’re just like us! Stumbling love-drunk into the mist. Except they’re tan while they do it (that broad stroke stays).

Lyrics full of late-summer longing reach out towards you over a humbled disco beat and the warm burble of electronic holiday sounds. It's not a blend that's gonna blow new holes in the fabric of time, but Kisses do ch*llw*ve better than the 3.4 kagillion (approx) other acts splashing around on imaginary, musical beaches at the minute. A large part of the appeal resides in the throat of Jesse Kivel—working here away from his dayjob fronting indie-poppers Princeton, his croon presides elegantly over music made with his lover Zinzi Edmundson. You can hear the love in it, actually. I've never met anyone who doesn't like hearing love. And what is the sound of love...? Exactamundo! Aptly named, Kisses' debut album, The Heart Of The Nightlife, will be released October 11.
