EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Paul and The Patients - Blogspot

Posted by Faith-Ann Young

Tags: brit pop, rock, indie

Paul and The Patients' brit pop is just damn addictive. From lush, psychedelic-based songs like "Complaint 15" to The Shins-esque, "Well Done You World," the tracks consistently hook in your head. As for the track "Blogspot" below, it is more of a loose, acoustic jam that perfectly displays lead singer Paul Holmes' apathetic yet sexy tenor. Patient guitar strums build into a simple, hook-heavy chorus. It's apt to that Paul and The Patients' debut EP To The Lions is being put out by American Myth Recordings - the same label that debuted the chic rocker Lissy Trullie's first EP.

Sounds Like: Oasis, The Verve, The Shins, The Corals, Vincent Vincent and The Villains

DOWNLOAD: The Brothers Movement - Blind

Since forming in 07, The Brothers Movement has opened for the Jesus & Mary Chain, BRMC, Primal Scream, Ian Brown, MC5, Sonic Youth and Brian Jonestown Massacre.  Not too shabby for 5 dudes from Dublin.  Combining the epic sonic build of classic shoegaze with the chugging chorus of straight up arena rock and the reedy confidence of vintage Brit Pop, the Brothers Movement are boldly stepping into Richard Ashcroft and Co.'s battered trainers.  09 feels like a year ripe for some Brit Pop re-invention - count the Brothers Movement among the leaders of the march.

Sounds Like: The Verve, Glasvegas, The Morning After Girls, Black Angels

It takes some balls to go over 1 minute in a tune before the rest of the band kicks in, but on the Nacional's "On TV" it works to excellent effect; wondering, waiting, anticipation growing as singer Jamie Hamilton talks about "bleeding on TV."  When it does kick in it's all spiky cheeky angular guitar riffs that you can picture Ian Curtis jerking to and cheerfully glum delivery that sounds like it could have been produced decades ago and yet somehow sounds decidedly 'now.'  "Yorkshire," cements the fact that this Glasgow-based quintet know that the best way around a sulky pop song is through undeniably dance-inducing riffs and if the UK reviews are to be believed, live this song charms the pants off every filly and fella in the room.

Sounds like: The Wedding Present, the Cribs, Maximo Park

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Littl'ans - Indian Summer + Older Younger Lover

Littl'ans already have a duet with Pete Doherty in the bag (see vid above for "Their Way,") and enjoy a tight relationship with head designer for Dior Homme, Hedi Slimane (he's taken a number of classically haunting photographs of the band).  But don't hate them because they're beautiful. Littl'ans have produced much to love with their first album out last year, chock full of bewitching,  brooding, doo-wop influenced pop songs tinged with the sexy outlaw charm of having the Syd Barrett blues.  Today's two songs are from upcoming release Stay Alive and we don't blame you if you have a hard time resisting the allure of what could soon be your favourite new band.

Sounds like: Syd Barrett, the Libertines, Babyshambles

DOWNLOAD AND VIDEO: Thomas Tantrum - Why the English Are Rubbish + Work It (Video)

I don't throw the "next big thing" label around a lot because 1. I am not the NME and 2. I am usually wrong.  But what the hell, it's Thursday and I am feeling crazy.  Thomas Tantrum has all the ingredients to be the Next Big Thing.  A self-effacing tune of pop perfection with some French phrases thrown in about being British?  Check.  A clever first music video with an undeniably foxy and born to be on a magazine cover blond front lady?  You bet.  Irreverent 3 minute bursts of too-fun-not-to dance-to songs about being young, having fun and raging "against the tantrum"?  It's too perfect to not be true.  Thomas Tantrum has 4 singles out (cause they're British) and their full length s/t album hit the UK on Monday.  It's only a matter of time before some US label grabs em and cocks it up, so grab this tune and marvel at this video and God save the Queen.

Sounds Like: Art Brut, the Okmoniks, Be Your Own Pet, the Ting Tings, Duke Spirit

DOWNLOAD: Johnny Boy - You Are The Generation That Bought More Shoes And You Get What You Deserve + Johnny Boy Dub

The first time "You Are The Generation That Bought More Shoes and You Get What You Deserve," came charging out of my stereo speakers, I knew Johnny Boy was going to become an obsession.  Bucking the notion of how much noise 2 people can make, what it means to participate in the music industry, what it means to make a wall of sound, what worshiping Phil Spector and being "modern" and "British" can sound like, Johnny Boy has put together tunes so undeniably catchy members Davo and Lolly could rest comfortably knowing that they've created songs indelible enough to stand up to classic tracks from the Ronettes to the Clash.  But what would be the fun in that?  Grab these two tunes and just try to get them out of your head.  Watch out world, here comes Johnny Boy.

Sounds like: The Clash, the Ronettes, the Ting Tings, Panda Bear, Au

VIDEO THRWBCK: Blur - Parklife (1994)

Posted by Cameron Cook

Tags: brit pop

We've just learned that Walthamstow Stadium, the dog track that is featured on the cover of Blur's Parklife album, is set to close this summer. We don't really care about dog racing, but Parklife is one of the best album covers of the '90s for sure, so we thought we'd give subtle homage by posting the 1994 video for the title track.
