In the 90's, before becoming a preeminent boogie ambassador to the people, Dam-Funk was filling up the hours after crate digging as a session keyboard player for Ice Cube, Westside Connection and MC Eiht. Twenty years later, Dam hasn't left the G-Funk Era–he's linked back up with Eiht (creator of the catch-phrase "Gyeah") to make sure y'all know that after all these years, he's kept his "Hood Pass Intact."

We actually spent a day at the carnival on Sunday, eating lots of dubious fried products (really, with the deep fried calzones?) and venturing onto rides to test our stomachs' ability to keep them down. It was fun but exhausting. From the sound of this, a day at the carnival with Dam Funk would be a much mellower experience–link up with some friends, maybe play a few rounds of that squirt gun game, and definitely not eat a deep fried calzone. Also, dance to some futurist boogie. It's pulled from the forthcoming Proximity One comp, the debut release from newbie LA electronic label Proximal that's due out August 10.

RCRD THRWBCK: Animal Collective - Summertime Clothes (Dam-Funk Remix)

Welcome to the fifth RCRD THRWBCK, where each weekend a different editor will select a record from our virtual stacks that they deem worthy for reevaluation and/or reintroduction.

Confession that is now somewhat embarassing to admit: this barely-a-year-old remix was my first introduction to Dam-Funk. Can't be up on everything all the time, and if you're going to not know someone, it might as well be someone a band as continually weird-referencing as Animal Collective works with. Anyway. At first, I hated it, because it's not overdosing on Vitamin D/ring-around-the-rosy vibes like the original. It also has no dynamics. This, I eventually realized, was kind of the point–Dam is just trying to hold down one of the most weightless bands in existence. If Animal Collective is a hot air balloon (which they are, frequently), Dam-Funk and his drum machines are the ropes and stakes keeping it grounded. And there's power inherent to that restraint, even if it's not made obvious by skull-crushing kick drums and varying levels of intensity. Letting it all hang out like that would be distasteful. And Dam-Funk, if anything, is a beacon of taste.

I like to imagine someone playing the plinky plonky melody to this track with one raised eyebrow and an arch grin. Why is that important? It's not - but like Fight Club, divorce and genital warts, Mock & Toof's nu-boogie is not the sort of thing you talk about. It's a dance you do with your shoulders. It's just slinky like that.

As technology advances, the world's appetite for speed grows ever more intense, always finding new ways for us to get more done faster. Meanderthals can hardly be blamed, then, for offering a more leisurely-paced alternative on their forthcoming debut album, Desire Lines. Consisting of London dub-house duo Idjut Boys and Oslo's Rune Lindbæk, Meanderthals conjure breezy, seaside atmospheres that split the difference between Balearic boogie and stoned psychedelica. On "Kunst or Ars," their bent and stretched guitar leads arch over an easygoing combination of clave flecks, pastoral acoustic strums, slow-handed funk bass and shimmering steel drum melodies. Satisfying like a long, hard-earned stretch or a frosty beverage on a hot day, Meanderthals' serene tunes remind listeners to take it easy.

Sounds like: Windsurf, Studio

FEATURED: Howlin' Rain

On "Lord Have Mercy" Howlin' Rain declares this "the dawning of the age of a cannibal world," and judging by how wide Ethan Miller opens his mouth to snarl those blues, we're inclined to believe it. The track, along with "Dancer At The End Of Time," is the first to leak from the band's second album, Magnificent Fiend, out March 4 on Birdman/American. Like last time around, it's the unholy matrimony of Skynyrd, Canned Heat and the Allmans, staggering and on fire. Raven Sings The Blues has got all that full tilt boogie for your enjoyment.
