Black metal obviously isn't our "lane," but Liturgy aren't your run-of-the-mill black metal band. Their barrage is brutal and grating and, yes, sometimes sounds like dying everything, but it also stirs your gut in a way that a lot of blast beat-heavy bands don't. Maybe it's their playing–tight and focused but not 1000% perfect, a refreshing jolt of humanity in these days of edited-to-death metal records. And, at least experientially, their shower of head-clearing, noise-soaked rage is a hell of a lot of fun to listen to. Two highlights from their Renihilation LP are below, waiting to expunge whatever sleep may still be residing in your eyelids.

Based on vowel-deprivation alone, Wrnlrd belongs here on RCRD LBL. This exquisite blackened gem from the arcane metal artist’s forthcoming Myrmidon conjures the full spectrum of metallic elements: guttural growls and epic female (I think — is “Buccinator” a woman’s name?) shrieks; riffs of classic grandeur; sun-slaying solos; and a forest of guitar thorns that close in on you at the end. It’s all arranged and played with frightening power; you will find it to be quite diabolically awesome.
