EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Early Day Miners - Silver Oath + So Slowly + 2 More

Posted 10/7/2009 11:15 AM by Hillary Kaylor

Tags: Americana, indie, rock

“Silver Oath” is a sparse tune calling out from a sepia-toned shanty town, bending under the weight of its own dust.  We know less than we should of certain patches of America, of driving trucks through dim flatlands of soy, but we do know earnest, atmospheric indie rock and Early Day Miners encapsulate both. The Treatment is out on Secretly Canadian now, and a sampling from that record and past is below.

Magnolia Electric Co.’s Rider.Shadow.Wolf. 7" hit shelves last week and we were psyched to learn that beyond the stellar title track, there was a sparse, early version of “Josephine”—a song Bevan found to be a primer for the band’s Americana sundae. Today, we’ve got another track off the band’s still-excellent LP and warm nudge for you to go pick up both offerings from the good folks at Secretly Canadian.

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: The Duke & The King - The Morning I Get To Hell + If You Ever Get Famous

A couple of singer-songwriters inspired by literary charlatans, NPR darlings The Duke & The King draw from Huckleberry Finn, freshly-shot BB guns, wide plains and open spaces.  At times precious, other times bare, there’s always the comforting sense of a roving partner in crime in these chords, someone to flick a lighter in the dark to signal it’s time to jump to the next train car. If there was ever a band that sounds best live, under a blanket and a starless sky, it’s probably these guys.

So this is the second time we've used this photo of A.A. Bondy and we'd like to point out that it's like dude is on his own sepia-toned nature show, showing us how awesome tall grass is. We're kinda into it, which means we probably spend too much time in front of the computer. "I Can See The Pines Are Dancing" keeps the agrarian theme going, one of the more ballad-y cuts from his new LP When The Devil's Loose, which came out yesterday through Fat Possum.

The last western I saw was Nick Cave's The Proposition, and if nothing else that movie reinforced that the genre is still pertinent and badass and not necessarily American. Spindrift roam similar territory–these two songs stem from an album called The Legend Of God's Gun that inspired a film of the same name, presumably one involving lots of antique firearms and the band's Morricone-worshipping desert music. Tomorrow they link up with the Dandy Warhols in Missouri for a string of shows through the heartland, those dates after the break.

Last year, while Faith-Ann was using it to cure her hangovers, I slept on Port O'Brien's All We Can Do Is Sing LP. Stupid me. The San Franciscan troupe have a new one called threadbare due October 6 on TBD and this floorboard creaker is its first single. I recommend you don't do what I did last time.

Portland barn burners Blitzen Trapper have a new EP coming out through Sub Pop; it's titled after this song, which originally appeared on their second album Furr, and features another six jams previously available on a tour-only CD-R. Rolling Stone thought Furr was the thirteenth best record of 2008, which, when you think about it, is a way cooler slot than any of the twelve preceding numbers. "13" means you are suspicious and dangerous, and to paraphrase an old Mitch Hedberg joke, "B" looks like a scrunched together "13", which means it is also suspicious and dangerous and, hey look at that, Blitzen Trapper starts with a "B". What we're saying is, this band is on another level cosmically and this song jams like Cat Stevens when he went by Cat Stevens.

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: April Smith And The Great Picture Show! - Drop Dead Gorgeous (Live)

Boasting all the carnival quirk and old-timey sarsaparilla* of any act we know, suffice it to say that April Smith is a jazzy songbird invoking the best of bygone eras. When trails of smoke filled jewel-box rooms and the red velvet flowed like wine. That happened, right? Miss Smith takes us where it’s safe and smells of old woolen cloth and prohibition. Her voice is lovely on this excellent live recording, which should be played in your boudoir at full volume. If you’re lucky enough to catch her at Lollapalooza, we say okay.

*We didn’t know it was spelled that way, either.

"Smith Hill", named after a neighborhood in Deer Tick's hometown of Providence, is the seam-bursting ballad on their Born On Flag Day LP, the one with swelling strings and flophouse imagery. Idealistic, sure, but we've never been averse to that and, c'mon, look at that dreamcatcher! Flag Day is out now through Partisan and Deer Tick just launched another run through the States in support. Those dates after the break.
