DOWNLOAD: Major Lazer - Hold The Line (Poirier Remix)

Well, doesn't that fit nicely. Montreal bass king Ghislain Poirier–whose excellent new Soca Sound System EP was previewed here a few weeks ago–mashed his soca/ghettotech hyrbid riddim "Wha-La-La-Leng" (from S.S.S.) with the new Major Lazer single "Hold The Line," somehow making Santi and Mr. Lexx sound even more tireless in the process. Grab the MP3 below, we're going to go play along with some pots and pans and piss off the neighbors for awhile.

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Poirier - Get Crazy (feat. Mr. Slaughter)

If the notes accompanying Poirier's excellent new Soca-themed EP, Soca Sound System, are to be believed, "Get Crazy" was recorded at a hotel in the wee hours of the morning following Poirier's DJ set at last year's New Yorker festival (yes, thrown by the magazine). This is alarming for a few reasons: 1) Soca, the Calypso-informed hybrid of dancehall and chutney music that originated in Trinidad & Tobago, is known for its relentlessly driving percussion, hardly what your fingers want to be bashing out on an MPC at five or six in the morning; 2) How did the neighbors not call the police worried those drums sounded like gun shots? We're assuming that Mr. Slaughter tacked on his verse after the fact, but maybe he didn't, and maybe Ghislain and Slaughter were just going at the track until far after the sun came up, ignorant of fatigue and noise complaints. I like that idea. The song is available exclusively for download below, so if you need something to pick you up off the floor this morning this is your jam. Soca Sound System is out now through Ninja Tune. Poirier is currently on a swing through North America, dates after the jump.

Sounds like: 77Klash, Diplo, Machel Montano

DOWNLOAD: What's Up? - Harper + Seasoning's Greeting (Cropped and Subdued Mix)

(Photo: Katelyn Reeves)

The most blatant talent of California three-piece What's Up? is their unnerving ability to articulate in sound colours that haven't even been seen yet. "Harper", which wears its guitar strings tight across the neck in a mimic of steel pans, is perhaps the best example of this: its trebly tones flailing wildly like a haywire fruit machine or the plumage of a flamingo flock if, instead of feasting on the brine shrimp that turn their feathers pink, they reverted to a diet of LSD and fireworks. Seriously vivid and in the mood to party, What's Up? will get you kaleidoscopically crunk on their weirdo sunshine jams.
