DOWNLOAD: Alan Watts - Africa Bats

In most contexts, the screeching menace of bats as background noise in a song would be horrifying. Not so with this new Alan Watts jam called "Africa Bats." Those shrill sirens actually add an ambient, distorted crunch to the proceedings, which are also filled with a hypnotic bass loop, four-the-the-floor stomp and vocals that could care less. The group's new EP, …Is The Fantasy Band, is out this week on Blackburn Recordings

PREMIERE: Follow That Bird - Wooden Bones

Posted by Shannon Hassett

Tags: garage, post punk

This song is awesome. I suppose that's not saying it with much flair, but sometimes you have to call 'em like you see 'em. A garage band at its core with the wherewithal and dominating vocal presence of Lauren Green to slow it down without getting sloppy, "Wooden Bones" is a great example of the Austin trio's range. Walking more of a post-punk line, Green packs gorgeous and badass all in one punch, recalling at times long-lost Richmond favorite Denali. Featured on a 7-inch released yesterday on Mt. Fuji, the label will also put out the debut LP from Follow That Bird this fall, and you can catch them on tour now with ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead

DOWNLOAD: Abe Vigoda - Don't Lie

Abe Vigoda's new record is incredible. Following on from last year's Skeleton longplayer, Reviver EP finds the LA quartet breaking new ground once again; a version of Stevie Nicks' (yes) "Wildheart" and a re-worked "Endless Sleeper" dragging their tropical punk into a gloom only briefly glimpsed in the darkest moments of Skeleton. "Don't Lie" tempers the light and the shade, rising then falling in a familiar chorus of guitars tuned to sound like steel pans, doting bass gargles and Reggie Guerrero's perfectly spoiled rhythm. There's no stalling Vigoda - a band that seem able to evolve ceaselessly, careening off toward the nearest horizon. Reviver gets its US release on February 17 through PPM and will arrive in the UK through Bella Union at some point in the next two months.

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: The Organ - Fire In The Ocean + Don't Be Angry

Let me preface this by saying that I love all things Smiths/Morrissey, so I don't take the comparison lightly. When people say a band sounds like either one of them, I generally lose interest, since 99% of the time it's just not true: it's sort of like inviting me to your cousin's art opening because his stuff is "just like Picasso." That being said, I think that sadly defunct Vancouver band The Organ sounds a lot like The Smiths. Lead singer Katie Sketch's mournful warble is a direct descendant of the Mozzer's, and guitarist Debora Cohen seems to own the "make everything sound like bells" machine that made Johnny Marr's work the golden standard of new wave and post-punk. Each of these two exclusive tracks from their posthumous EP Thieves combines those qualities with lilting minor key harmonies, over the chirping clatter of the rhythm section. One listen to these songs and you'll wish they had recorded more.

Wow, thanks God. I mean, we know we're messing up with the whole global warming/war for oil thing, but it's nice to know You're at least giving us a Violens/MGMT/Grizzly Bear tour as a consolation prize. When we're nothing but floating heads in a cryogenetically frozen tanks of goo and the Earth is a barren wasteland of nuclear fallout, at least we'll still have the sweet memories of this summer's ridiculously amazing shows. So, You know, thanks.

VIDEO THRWBCK: The Slits - Typical Girls (1979)

Every time we hear some dumb interviewer ask some amazing all-girl band like, the Coathangers or something a question like, "So, what's it like to be an all-girl band?" A) it makes us pukey and B) we get really pissed off when the band actually answer the question instead of doing what the Slits would do, which is obviously just be awesome, not care and do whatever (which is what the Coathangers pretty much do, but we were just using them as an example). Seriously, try it sometimes.

Oh, serendipity. We’re still coasting on an indie pop high from seeing the Vaselines in all their glory last night, when who should post a track by post-C86 band Softboiled Eggies but the Spaceland RCRD LBL blog. Softboiled Eggies can be often found at the Echo, at the venue's Saturday night indie party Part Time Punks (named after the Television Personalities single, natch), and much like the Vaselines, they’re a girl/boy duo with a whole bunch of tongue-in-cheek ire and wit. “She Fell Through the Trees” makes us really want to check this band out live, nothing is better than homegrown local bands that can really bust out the post-punk melodies.

Sounds like: Television Personalities, The Wake, Lydia Lunch, Chairlift
