FEATURED: Timbaland at the SEEN RCRD LBL blog

Posted 5/15/2008 2:28 PM by Cameron Cook

Tags: hip hop, rap, pop

We’re not quite sure what to think about this one. It’s our personal belief that Timbaland is basically our generation’s Phil Spector, and his music has always been consciously commercial, so we’re not that surprised, but a Verizon bus? That’s like, pretty weird.

The SEEN RCRD LBL blog reports that Timba will be recording his new record on a mobile studio/bus as part of a promotion with Verizon. Which is all swell and dandy, but the best part of this promotional video is Madonna fake-bitching about her vocals on “Four Minutes”. Thumbs up, Tim!

What do Jesus And The Mary Chain, Primal Scream, Franz Ferdinand, Belle and Sebastian and Camera Obscura have in common? Though they span the musical spectrum, they all hail from Glasglow. As do Sons and Daughters and Frightened Rabbit. Ok enough with the freakin’ musical geography lesson you say. Let us introduce a new member of this Glaswegian musical posse, Martin & James, aptly named after Martin Kelly and James O’Neill (Scottish much?) These two create weighty acoustic hymns and introspective odes of love and tears. Lyrics delivered over raw acoustic like Simon and Garfunkel. Their song “Crashing” cathartically relies on a heavy bass drum, while “Not Alone” is simple, unadorned acoustic love song with haunting flickers of reverb.

SOUNDS LIKE: Simon & Garfunkel, Damien Rice

FEATURED: Popjustice interviews Santogold

Our favorite pop blog ever, Popjustice.com, just posted an awesome interview with our girl Santogold where they discuss, amongst other things, her work on the Ashlee Simpson album, how Santogold can be categorized as “indie rock”, and that pesky horse that made her sick on the set of the “L.E.S. Artistes” video.

VIDEO THRWBCK: Lesley Gore - You Don't Own Me (Live) (1964)

Posted 5/13/2008 8:06 AM by Cameron Cook

Tags: pop

Recently while taking a weekend stroll through the city, we came upon a vinyl vendor near the Cooper Union campus at Astor Place. We always stop by these dudes to see what they're carrying--you never know what awesome stuff you might find. Turns out this guy had a mint copy of Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows, Lesley Gore's greatest hits compilation from the '60s (he tried to sell us a Donovan record as a deal, and no offense to Donovan, but we weren't that into it). Anyway, the record is really, really good, obviously: all of those '60s teen starlets are worth their weight in cheesy gold. The album has "You Don't Own Me", on which Lesley sings with an almost palpable passion, and lyric-wise is pretty prescient, since Lesley is now openly gay and in her early '60s. We love her, so we thought we'd share this live performance of "You Don't Own Me" from a 1960s variety show.

The Fool’s Gold RCRD LBL blog just posted a bunch of cool stuff, including a whole mess of Kid Sister video interviews (always looking fly, that one), the awesome new Chromeo video, and the third installation of Trizzy’s Mindspray, A-Trak’s stream-of-consciousness op-ed blog (this one chronicling the perils of occupying 10 hotel rooms in 12 days). Enjoy.

David Avram Brown, a.k.a. Los Angeles-based singer songwriter Benny Strange, compares the process of making music to a “cathartic outlet essential to both emotional and spiritual survival”, which may be true for most artists, but it’s a statement David really takes to heart--after all, this is a man who hitch-hiked from New York to LA because it  seemed "necessary at the time". His music has followed him all around the word (from NYC, to LA to Maui) and the tracks we’re releasing today, “Sifting” and “Askewed” off of his new EP When Continents Collide have a certain wise-beyond-their-years quality to them. The subtle piano riff on “Askewed” reminds us of Ben Folds (pre-being annoying) where as the poppy keyboard line and lyrics on “Sifting” is like a slowed down version of ‘90s alt-pop legends the Rentals. It’s lovable stuff.

Sounds like: Ben Folds, Rufus Wainwright, Belle & Sebastian

VIDEO THRWBCK: Peter Gabriel - In Your Eyes (1986)

Posted 5/10/2008 2:43 PM by Cameron Cook

God, this song is so good. Obviously the pivotal scene from '80s teen classic Say Anything, but also one of Peter Gabriel's best songs ever, and one that has been stuck in our heads for the past 24 hours. Epic.

"There is something magical about the summertime for me: cruising around with my girl in my car, going to the beach and walking in the sand. It's my childhood all over again every summer." These words came straight from the mouth of Explorer's Club frontdude Jason Brewer just yesterday via iChat. Even if I don't own a car anymore nor do I have a girl with which I could cruise (contact info available upon request, ladies), I grew up in the desert. We had shitloads of sand to walk around in! What I need more of however, is the Beach Boys-inspired surf jams of The Explorers Club. Oh, weird. We have three cuts from their new record (out on 5/20) right here. CRAZY. The gods of summer are smiling down on us more and more every day.

DOWNLOAD: Sunny Day Sets Fire - Brainless

Posted 5/8/2008 1:50 PM by Faith-Ann Young

Tags: indie rock, pop

We first introduced you to the exuberant, happy-go-lucky Sunny Day Sets Fire- with the bad-ass remix that the Cool Kids did of their tune "Stranger" a few months back. Now, we're showing off their true skin with the original version of the song "Brainless." (Yeah, we know- Baron Von Luxury and Mad Decent have also made killer dance remixes of the same track too). Buttressed by a playful trumpet and acoustic guitar, "Brainless" is light-hearted and whimsical; a perpetual happy-pill. This tune and others off SDSF's July release "Summer Palace" are guaranteed playlist favorites for idling in the park or daydreaming out the window this summer.

SOUNDS LIKE: Of Montreal, Blonde Redhead, Ra Ra Riot
