DOWNLOAD: Liam Finn - Second Chance (Live at Spaceland)

Spaceland’s RCRD LBL blog have just released an awesome live track of their homie Liam Finn performing his song “Second Chance”, which they recorded super early in the man’s career. Now solidly established, this song shows a raw, rough side of Liam many may have not encountered before. The song has a definite sense of urgency to it, like Ted Leo pouring his heart out to his favorite Clash records. When the drums kick in at about 4:25 (spoiler alter!) things get seriously next level. Spaceland have a long and illustrious history with Liam, so head over to their blog to check out the video for “Second Chance” and more info on Liam’s album I’ll Be Lightening.

So the first good news of the week, or perhaps month, is that LA Riots is doing 4 free shows with Felix Cartal and the Bloody Beetroots courtesy of Scion in the end of April. Ever since they let us lounge in the plush seats of their luxury-sized tour bus this spring (see INTERVIEW and details here), we've been eying them for new releases. So good news numero dos is they've just released new gnarly tracks. Better yet? The boys also invited their friends, like Bloody Beetroots, White Noise and Le Castle Vania, to remix tracks as well. I guess that's what DJs who like DJs do for their DJs friends. (Let's be honest, if I were BFFs with Bloody Beetroots, I'd hand them my whole damn I-Pod and say "Go ahead, fuck with whatever you want...as long as I can keep it. and maybe sell it. Later bud. ') Regardless, in case you weren't salivating yet, here's a free taste from the compilation, Toxic Avenger's Escape remixed by the bloody boys themselves.

PS For more news on the Scion tour,  stopping through San Fran, LA, NY and Chicago end of April), check LA Riots myspace for more details.

I used to be a huge sissy. Last December the almighty Mudhoney came to New York to play their classic album Superfuzz Bigmuff (20th Anniversary re-release and new album, Lucky Ones, due 5/20) at Bowery Ballroom and throughout their most gnarly of sets, a large pit consumed much of the floor just in front of the stage. Somehow I've been been able to avoid moshing most of my life, but there was a moment (and it could have been the many man sodas that night) during "Here Comes Sickness" where I decided it was time to put some hair on my chest and finally check things out. Everything was going really well until my sneaker caught a slick spot on the hardwood and I hit the deck preeeeetty hard. A dude helped me up right away, looked me in the eye and said, "You are wearing the most amazing windbreaker I have ever seen." Bros forever and sissy no more.

I'd like to believe that moment is distilled in all of these tracks. I'm so excited to post them.

Swedish singer-songwriter Peter von Poehl creates illuminated dreamscapes with his music.  His forthcoming album (to be released June 10 in North America) "Going To Where The Tea Trees Are" boasts inspired arrangements using guitar, piano harmonies, sax, and Peter's unmistakable falsetto that don't really sound like anything else you've heard before. He's garnered a lot of airplay and buzz in France, and we're thinking his stuffs will translate well on this side of the pond as well. If his latest video for the song "Story Of The Impossible" is any indication (reminds us of a Grand Theft Auto game gone warm & fuzzy on LSD), we'll be hearing and seeing a lot more of PvP in the coming months.

The good folks at World's Fair have given you a free mp3 download of the title track from the album "Going To Where The Tea Trees Are", so check it.

INTERVIEW + DOWNLOAD: The Heavy

British blues-rock band the Heavy piece together the best parts of the Stooges, Sam Cooke and the White Stripes to create songs that are as soulful as they are, erm, heavy. They’re in the middle of a US tour at the moment, and their new album Great Vengeance and Furious Fire was released to rave reviews. Their track “Coleen” oozes sex appeal and the shared knowledge of dirty deeds done cheap like nothing in the history of rock for quite some time. We sat down with the band recently and lobbed a few questions their way. Check out their answers and an MP3 of “Coleen” below.

EXCLUSIVE DOWNLOAD: Dirty on Purpose - Canned Fumes

Today is a big one for us, and all fellow Dirty on Purpose fans. When we signed DoP on to create a brand new EP for us from scratch, we knew it would be special, but we had no idea the end result would be Dead Volcanoes, a record that exists on its own terms within the DoP cannon. Like their previous EP Like Bees, Dead Volcanoes takes the niche that the band have found for themselves (sweetened, Americana-influenced indie pop) and churns its ingredients to a fine, yummy pulp.

The final track of the EP, today’s exclusive “Canned Fumes” is no exception to the rule. Sung by guitarist George Wilson, the song borrows amply from bands like the Jesus and Mary Chain, hinting at a return of DoP’s more shoegaze aspects from a few years (and albums) ago. The pace is slow and dreamy, the perfect closer to a record that we’ve grown to adore since its first track, the ballad "Leaving", debuted on the site close to when we firist launched. It’s the end of a chapter in our relationship with DoP, but nowhere near the end of the book. We have way more goodies in store with this bunch, but for now, here’s Dead Volcanoes in its entirety. Enjoy…

DOWNLOAD: DeVotchKa - Transliterator

Posted 5/12/2008 11:11 AM by Cameron Cook

DeVotchKa are a gangly crew of classically-trained musicians with heritage from all over the world—Mexico, America, Italy, Eastern Europe, and many, many more exotic locales. Onstage they possess a unique aura, if only because of the sheer amount of instruments they play (everything from an upright bass to a tuba adorned with Christmas lights are crammed onstage during a DeVotchKa show), and the skill with which they play them. It’s like a chill, understated version of Gogol Bordello, or the Arcade Fire with more European flair and less of a death wish. Most of the world was introduced to DeVotchKa when they serendipitously scored the soundtrack for 2006’s sleeper hit Little Miss Sunshine after the filmmakers heard one of their songs on the radio, but their new album A Mad & Faithful Telling might be their greatest piece of work yet. Frontman Nick Urata is in perfect control of his pleading vocals, and musically the band soars to heights previously only hinted at. Their track “Transliterator” has been on repeat in the office all morning, so we had to share it with you guys.

Sounds like: M. Ward, Luke Temple, The Long Winters
