PREMIERE: Kris Menace - Falling Star + Depeche Mode and Little Boots Remixes

Posted by Hillary Kaylor

Tags: dance, house, electronic

Today with Kris Menace, it’s three bounces for the price of one – and they are all major 'floor-lifters. First, the beat-tastic premiere of “Falling Star,” a towering piece of ‘90s-infused German house and spacey teaser to upcoming album Electric Horizon. Next, two more from the big name selector’s enormous back catalog: a bumping refit of Depeche Mode’s “Fragile Tension,” now reinforced by slickly-produced bass burps, and a twinkly stunting of Little Boots’ “Crescendo,” which buries her angelic voice beneath a sea of samples and pop synths.

Eli Escobar is the reason we love dance music. His output is always on a positive tip – nothing too serious, everything totally fun. “Work It” is a slippery alloy of orgasmic moans, housey keys and big bad bass. It screams, “Everybody, let’s hump this floor!” And the video, starring shaky clips of Madonna, Parker Posey, Eddie Murphy and flailing, strobe-lit kids from the ‘80s and ‘90s, is a play-by-play on how to do just that. Dither Down’s got the release right now, and if you are a good time (or want to have one), you will get it.

In this, as in any, time of year, you may ask yourself how is it that you got to this stage and really, truly, what’s it all about? Enter dance-thug-cum-sage and Philly pluralist Dances With White Girls with the answer that’s been hidden inside your gooey center all along. Duh, ‘It’s About The House,’ y’all! It’s about the floor, the bounce, the bass, the clap, the boom, the reverb, and the throttle. And with Fool’s Gold crew Cubic Zirconia’s panty-ripping remix, it’s also about the Detroit tech slap. Funky, life-affirming music ahead, and on the rest of DWWG’s single of the same name, out on Plant now.

PREMIERE: Riva Starr & Fatboy Slim (feat. Beardyman) - Get Naked (Dub Mix)

Riva Starr has enlisted dance staple (and creator of arguably the best music video, ever) Fatboy Slim and big beat boxer Beardyman for upcoming 2012 jam “Get Naked.” And before it drops there shall be remixes, including this flippant dub version, clapping with a marching drumline, distorted hypeman vox and rando sponge-stick bass. On Riva’s SoundCloud, every other comment on this fix is “Me gusta!” or “Yo!” and we can't dissent from those perfect exclamations. 'Cause it's heavy and hilarious and begs for a shouting audience. Keep an eye out on Moshi Moshi for that EP early next year—it’s also going to include a redux by house dude of all house dudes, Carl Cox.

Is it cliché to describe something as future robot sex music? If not, then this is that. RCMP’s (aka DJ Apt One and Relative Q's) “Strings” has humping basslines, talky bot breakdowns, swollen synths and keytar eruptions at every sweaty turn. This is get wet music, y’all! And so is the rest of the EP, ready for your love on Young Robots and iTunes right now.

PREMIERE: L-Vis 1990 - Lost In Love (Neon Dreams Club Mix)

Mad Decent cohort L-Vis 1990 has been making kids pant the night away for a while now with his hyperventilating strain of mutant house which utilizes fat UK-cum-French beats, rightfully cheesy club vox, cheeky synths, and faders galore. So it’s no shock that all that and more thrives on his own rework of single “Lost In Love,” which shall be out with a handful of other incarnations in September, before it arrives on debut album Neon Dreams, which washes ashore in October via PMR.

It doesn't matter what anything is if it's dead. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs? Totally bodacious DEAD astronauts. Immensely talented DEFUNCT acrobat troupe. Incomprehensibly hot MUMMIFIED army of mind-blowing CADAVEROUS babes. I like that Orlando Higginbottom, the guy behind TEED, has an appreciation for absurdity and self-defeat. It makes my experience of his music more enjoyable, because it makes me think that it's sprung from a real brain, rather than the empty skull of some cartoonish muscle-dance guy wearing shades in the club so he can only see in black and white. I can't imagine Orlando or Hot Chip's Joe Goddard—who turns "Garden" into a contemplative, colourful slice of geek-house here—wearing sunglasses. I can't even really imagine them in the club, but that's okay, because it's self-defeating, and as we've already discussed, I'm totally enormously into that.

"When did you cross the line?" That's usually the question at the core of any morning after a long night out. It's also the central idea of the Oliver remix of "Roman" by Parisian house duo Housse De Racket. Using the same ultra-compressed, hard-hitting sound now synonymous with French electronic music, the song is all brassy synthesizers, clipped piano chords and single, chiming notes at the service of blockbuster melodies. Housse De Racket's Kitsuné debut is out August 22.
