PREMIERE: Homeboy Sandman - The Carpenter (Cassettes Won't Listen Remix)

East coast amicably meets west in this spirited rework of Homeboy Sandman's distinct indie-hip hop hybrid. The Queens, New York MC has long been revered for his rhymes, and Jason Drake takes the straight shooting track to task with a hint of instrumentals. The producer and LA resident performs solo under Cassettes Won't Listen, here dropping in piano and percussion to create a dancy cushioning around "The Carpenter's" Dostoevsky-dropping verbage. Grab Cassettes Won't Listen's upcoming LP EVINSPACEY June 21 on Daylight Curfew.

DOWNLOAD: Big Pauper - Big Sick
.jpg)
The artist formerly known as Panzah Zandahz, Big Pauper is a Portland producer, DJ and visual artist with a penchant for mixing media. A little jazzy, a little psychedelic, with electronic and synth elements and obscure film clips dotted throughout, it's much more Tribe meets The Books than amphetamine-addled top 40 mash up. Instrumental hip hop with that crackled, old-time feel, "Big Sick" is a peek at what already seems to be an intelligent take on the genre. Catch the rest on Beyond My Means, Pauper's LP out April 26 on Circle Into Square and Fake Four Inc.

If there's an artist the music world is currently sweating more than Theophilus London, who cares? The globetrotting Brooklyn MC/genre alchemist/budding style icon just (literally like an hour ago) dropped his new mixtape, I Want You, and contained therein are enough lavish, neo-futurist sunset raps to make us forget that other people in this world are making music. Just kidding! But really, it's intoxicating. Below is just one its many high points–a throwback electro heater produced by Ruckazoid and featuring frequent Theophilus collaborator Jesse Boykins.

Rich Hil is nineteen, from Connecticut and hates it, and pals around with peeps named Boo Bonic. So, basically, he’s like everyone’s little brother. Except he’s also got this modern, thuggish-ruggish-bone thing going on. And he gets Kid Cudi to throw down on a song that’s not even an album track. “Won’t You Tell Me” flows cold and mournful on this bright, spring day. This, and more raspy street ballads, can be found on Hil’s forthcoming mixtape Limos Nostra Act. 1, while Rich is preparing to take residency at Brooklyn’s Public Assembly starting May 28.

RCRD OF THE DAY: Asher Roth - She Don't Wanna Man (Yes Giantess Remix)

(Photo: Hannibal Matthews)
Asher Roth's frat-rap anthem "She Don't Wanna Man" gets keytar-whipped into a cutting, danceable frenzy with adept electropopsters Yes Giantess at the wheel. The original can be found along with the rest of Roth's now-infamous backpack jams on Asleep In The Bread Aisle, but we prefer this synthed-out rework, which will twist, splash, and cowbell straight into your neon heart. Catch Yes Giantess if you can at their SXSW debut, which comes after a long line of killer shows spent supporting the likes of La Roux, MSTRKRFT, and Clipse.

DOWNLOAD: Stat Quo - Success (Back To U)

I’ve always liked Stat Quo because of his name, and now that he’s got an impending album titled Statlanta, I like him even more. Call me a sucker, but it’s funny! “Success (Back To U)” is a summertime jam loud with piano, strings and positive R&B vibes. It’s also likely blasting from the collective woofers of everyone fortunate enough to wear shorts year-round. Statlanta drops May 4 on Big Dream Ventures (50 Cent, G Unit) and before then, Stat is busy in the studio with Dr. Dre and Game.

DOWNLOAD: The Knux - The F*ck You EP

New Orleans-to-L.A. duo The Knux is currently working on their follow-up to their breakout album Remind Me in 3 Days, an album you either hated or loved, depending where you fell on a) the strategic marketing of hipster rap and b) cash money. In the meantime, guitars/electro/funk/f-bombs abound on The Fuck You EP—which despite its name, attempts to please all crowds by dabbling in every indie hip hop genre possible. For us, the clincher was the title (and final) track “Fuck You.” ‘Cause it kind of sounds like someone locked Andre 3000 in a closet with Cool C’s vinyl.
Sounds like: Xzibit, Outkast, The Roots

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: D-Lo And Snoop Dogg - No Hoe (Remix)

These days, Snoop's best know for keeping it studio, but in this rare edit of Bay-to-L.A. anthem "No Hoe," heavy with slipshot stomp, handclaps and minimal melody, there's not a bassline in sight. Thank rising MySpace stars D-Lo and Sleepy D for bringing back the West Coast gangsta tip--after the original tune ripped through Cali streets like wildfire, Snoop jumped in to drop verse and take over the hook. Pop bang, go ahead and do your thang! The Tonite Show featuring D-Lo is out now.
