DOWNLOAD: Vaz - Blockade

Posted by Shannon Hassett

Tags: noise, rock, grime

First there was Hammerhead—'90s noise-rock champion and stronghold of AmRep Records. Hammerhead disbanded and saw Paul Erickson and Jeff Moordian move to Vaz, where the duo ruled the '00s underground with the same blast-and-go zeal. Picking up guitarist Tyler Nolan, the Brooklynites now move into a third decade with the band's fifth album Chartreuse Bull. "Blockade" is a churning two-minute piece of grime-pop. Grab the tape on Damaged Rituals or the LP August 30 on Sleeping Giant Glossolalia, and catch them on tour now with Pygmy Shrews.

DOWNLOAD: DELS - GOB (feat. Jack Davey) (Dave Sitek Remix)

"These digitized times with they lies so pitiful," UK MC DELS raps on "GOB." Perhaps digitalization is directly proportional to the frequency of falsehoods, but with TV On The Radio producer Dave Sitek's hand in the pot, going digital doesn't seem so bad. The needly microchip-bass and swirling, aluminum synths only make DELS' "GOB" sound more urgent and expansive. DELS' rubbery, deep-chested flow is matched perfectly to the gritty drum programming and bleary horns, which show that the distance between TVOTR and Pete Rock may not be that far. And for this remix, Sitek brings along J*DaVeY frontwoman Jack Davey, who's not featured on the original, for a sterling chorus. The whole shebang augurs well for DELS' Big Dada debut, also titled GOB, out May 24th. For those curious if there will be more interesting digital fusions on the album, keep in mind that GOB features production from Micachu and Hot Chip's Joe Goddard.

PREMIERE: The Streets - Going Through Hell (Dot Rotten Remix)

I love and admire Mike Skinner to the extent that if I woke up tomorrow and I somehow was him, I don't think I'd tell anyone. Dot Rotten's remix of "Going Through Hell" is less reverential, cutting the original's Zeppelin-esque guitars (was former The Music frontman Robert Harvey called in for the chorus before or after they were added?) and pasting goofball grime-pop synths in their place. As long as Skinner's voice is there, though, it's never gonna be anything other than The Streets. Love you Mike – will def be buying your new album Computers and Blues when it arrives February 7 through 679.

PREMIERE: Starkey - Ok Love (Kotchy Remix)

Based on his remix of Starkey's "Ok Love," one can hear in Brooklyn-based Kotchy's beats an understanding of various strands of hip-hop and electronic music. The rhodes here indicate the liquefied softness of deep house and reflective hip-hop, while the drums recall Southern rap and wobble in their pauses and sudden lurches. At one point, the beat changes up into a sort of 2-step pattern, where the bass wiggles around a not-quite UK grime beat. That Kotchy is able to blend all these styles into a single track is part of the reason he should be on everyone's radar. But most importantly, it's that the sounds he produces just sound fresh. Kotchy's album, Two, will be released February 1st, 2011.

PREMIERE: Terror Danjah - Undeniable (feat. D Double E)

Mother says, 'Those grime MCs are only after one thing!' Might be right, but lines like "On a bad day you still look good to me"—and even that "HOOOOOOR" noise in the chorus, actually—sound the height or romance next to D Double E's verses on tracks like the more basely amorous "Bell Dem Slags". Away from his fellow Newham Generals, Darren Dixon's trademark stunted and stretched flow rides Terror Danjah's "Undeniable" like drift wood in storm weather: the beat—taken from Terror Danjah's new album of the same name, out November 1 through Hyperdub—designed to attract max attention with car alarm screams, rusted gates of heaven synth flares and low-end thrown like punches.

PREMIERE: James Yuill - On Your Own (XI Juicebox Remix)

Tags: dubstep, grime, garage

XI really messes with James Yuill here, tearing the tie from around his throat and ruffling his polite side-parting into a maniac fuzz. The Toronto native's remix of "On Your Own" is thick with murderous sub-bass but retains a certain agility, thanks to its ticklish synths and a garage skip held hostage in the bars. It's a far-cry from the altogether more coy and coquettish synth-pop original, which can be found on new album Movement In A Storm, out in June through Moshi Moshi.

DOWNLOAD: Jammer - Better Than (Lorn Remix)

The original version of "Better Than" isn't exactly lacking for strut, but Lorn underpins Jammer's vocal brag with low-end throbs that seem to emerge from the earth and those guillotine snares UK bass music loves so much. Jahmanji, Jammer's debut album 'proper', arrives through Ninja Tune on the 5th of July.

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Wiley - Never Be Your Woman (feat. Emeli Sandé) (Solo (UK) "Loves Garage" Remix)

Who would've thought it'd be Wiley who got to show Washed Out and Memory Tapes their roots? The man who invented grime takes things back to 1997, when White Town's bedroom-made hit "Your Woman" sat awkwardly atop the UK singles charts. I now hold White Town (AKA Jyoti Prakash Mishra) single-handedly responsible for the bedroom producer, DIY pop star craze, not that that's got much to do with this Solo remix, which neatly rewrites history by turning the track into a UK Funky clubber skank.

Sounds Like: Crazy Cousinz, Dizzee Rascal, Everything But The Girl
