DOWNLOAD: Screens - Pop Logic

Continuing the trend of Dischord drummers of yore this week is Andrew Becker, former member of Medications and current beatsmith of Screens. The New York art rockers also come stocked with alumni of The Apes and The Mall, and the band's dark and choppy noise is given the psych treatment in "Pop Logic". Think Liars if Mt. Heart Attack was less tropical and more urban jungle. Dead House is out May 17 on Becker's own What Delicate Recordings.

“Landing,” the title track from Githead’s November album, cruises along at a steady clip, a muscular, smooth, droning, mesmerizing rock tune. In other words, it kind of doesn’t make sense. When you discover that the London band is made up of Colin Newman (frontman of art-punk legends Wire), Robin Rimbaud (the veteran sound artist known as Scanner) and two members of ’80s avant-rock provocateurs Minimal Compact, you just expect something a bit less conventional. But all the power of their collective experience funnels together coolly behind Malka Spigel’s glassy vox, like shoegaze that looks you straight in the eye. The whole is simply different than the sum of its parts.

Crystal

Japanese Band, Crystal are one of our proudest finds: they offer up a very strange amalgamation of Art of Noise and YMO-influenced synth music, video and design. Come check out their highly enjoyable EP at http://www.institubes.com.The vinyl and digital releases are available right now!

Their first "Maxi" Single to have slipped under the radar was the awesome kraftwerk-flavoured computer pop "Infused!". Please please please take a look at their equally awesome (and self created!) video

The Secret History is a delicate, whimsical "art pop" collaboration between Michael Grace Jr. (formerly of My Favorite) and Lisa Ronson, (daughter of David Bowie's guitarist Mick Ronson). In the song, "It's Not the End of the World, lyrics like "memories make lovers of us all" paints the song in a dark and impassioned hue. Meanwhile, the catchy "Our Lady of Pompeii," leans on its anthemic chorus "Everyone fights a way" while containing hidden treats like a refreshingly sharp, jazzy piano reprise.

Sounds like: The Foxgloves, Elk City, El Perro Del Mar, The Battle of Land and Sea
