INTERVIEW + DOWNLOAD: The Heavy

British blues-rock band the Heavy piece together the best parts of the Stooges, Sam Cooke and the White Stripes to create songs that are as soulful as they are, erm, heavy. They’re in the middle of a US tour at the moment, and their new album Great Vengeance and Furious Fire was released to rave reviews. Their track “Coleen” oozes sex appeal and the shared knowledge of dirty deeds done cheap like nothing in the history of rock for quite some time. We sat down with the band recently and lobbed a few questions their way. Check out their answers and an MP3 of “Coleen” below.
In a sentence or two, introduce your band to our readers and tell us something we wouldn't know just by googling you.
You would never know that The Heavy is a half man, half wolf entity that has been roaming the British countryside like a rabid dog for over 5 years and that there seems to be no cure for their insatiable hunger. It has been seen prowling around many of the major cities of Europe and now some say they have sighted the beast in the U.S. The only thing that seems to keep the wolf at bay are the nastiest, filthiest riffs that could only have been conjured from way down below. The Heavy, however, is not a devil worshipper but something, I'm sure he would like to claim as his own......
Are you guys up on music sites/blogs? If so, which ones are your must-reads? Who is doing some cool and unique work in that space?
We understand that there is a huge community and network within blogworld but when your sole drive and ambition is lacing beats with the amount of dirt we do.............................you kinda don't have time. We're real happy with being the subject of blogs though.
What have your experiences been as a young band working to get your music/info out online? Has anything worked better or worse in terms of your online outreach?
When we set our myspace.com/theheavy73 page up two years ago, it was the best thing that we could've done for The Heavy. You can create a personality and drop whatever music you want to, without having to compromise a thing...................unless you're into porn (myspace don't do boobies!) We've just set up an imeem account now and are gonna see how that works for us as it seems to have some great features. We'll get back to you.
Last piece of vinyl you purchased?
I had to replace my Howling Wolf, Evil 7 {Cadet Records} after some drunken fool decided to pour Zambuca, all over my original copy at a chicken coop we were tearing up one night. It may have made the wax taste sweeter but Swaby was p***ed!
Plug your favorite bands our readers have not heard yet. And tell us what you have coming up in next few months.
A great band that we discovered from being on our label, +1 Records in New York, are a young band called The Morning Benders. They have a classic, sixties Beach Boy's esque sound that we all really like. Some of their riffs sound like they'll probably be getting sampled at some point in the future. Electric Wizard too, they are a doom metal band that sound as if they ve been belched up from the depths of hell except they are from Dorset in the UK, even more backwater than Noid!!!
