Gonna try to steer clear of sappy but this is my last RCRD LBL blog post; I'm leaving the RCRD LBL nest to embark on a new adventure/gig in Cali (some evidence of which will be disseminated on Twitter). Bottom line - I will miss you all you folks - the readers, co-workers, interns, musicians and muses...
"Everyday Routine" is by Emilie Hanak (i.e. Milkymee) - a whimsical French chanteuse who escaped to Sweden to craft folk-based songs - each of which emanates from dolce vita, caprice, yet melancholy. "Everyday Routine" is part of the French indie label Tsunami-Addiction's eclectic compilation Let's Kiss And Make Up, which also includes tracks from Brooklyn songstress Sharon Van Etten, the idiosyncratic Tim Fite, Telepathe, electro experimenters Lemonade & Glasser, and Holyshit....In sum, it is a surprisingly bad-ass accompaniment to a kiss and make-up.
PS Even the collage of videos of featured artists is worth a thorough click-through.

Bloc Party already proved their worth in Blackberry contacts by jam-packing their new remix album Intimacy with the most solid talent in the industry, the type that guarantees a riotous all-night dance rager. (After all, if they are gonna throw out a remix album while all the guitar hero speed freaks know their beats by heart, they may as well make it memorable.) We already hit you with a sick Armand Van Helden remix from the album but here's a stream of the hair-tossing electro banger from the LA-based duo Villains, who got props for tinkering with tracks from Lykke Li, N.A.S.A. and Shwayze. They are currently on tour in the land of Oz.

In case you haven't yet picked up UK rap ingenue Lady Sovereign's new album Jigsaw, here's extra proof that her talent and appeal far exceeds her pixie size. In this recession-friendly jam, "Pennies", electro-house producer Kill the Noise has tweaked the drum and bass, oozed in some swirling synths, added whistle affects, infused some guitar and voila! The result is what KTN describes as “one part British female MC, one part 808 dirty south drum programming, and one part heavy guitar processing.” Add that up, it’s 100% great.

Because it's one of those lazy Wednesdays when you want to loose track of time, we are bringing you another delicat, gauzy ambient track by the Texan duo, A.M. Architect. This one is heavy on ethereal harp, electronic xylophones and piano, and soothing synths. It's the type of jam you'd appreciate while getting an eucalyptus mud rub-down at the spa, during a sex-coma, with jeans rolled up and feet hanging off a dock somewhere quiet, or while flying far far away.
Sounds Like: Aether, Air France, RH+

From the Pacific Northwest, quirky Portland duo Adrienne Hatkin and Paul Seely meld guitar, accordion, banjo, piano, drums, glockenspiel, bass, melodica into rustic cottage-folk jams. Think of a smaller version of Port O'Brien if Port O' was inspired by forests and bonfires instead of swaying boats. Plus Hatkin's slurring, crackling voice, which lies somewhere between Janis Joplin and Brooklyn's Shilpa Ray, is one of a kind.

Just in time for the release of The Crystal Method's new album Divided By Night (out today), we're bringing you a slick new exclusive from the album. "Slipstream," in which Grandaddy frontman Jason Lytle lent his vocals, is echoing, sun-flecked electronica, as appropriate for burning rubber on an empty freeway as it is for close-up body slides on the dance floor.
FYI: The rest of the TCM album is just as sonically impressive, featuring collaborations with Matisyahu, New Order Bassist Peter Hook, and indie princess Emily Haines of Metric.
Sounds Like: Hybrid, The Chemical Brothers, Overseer

When we first heard TV On The Radio was releasing a Read Silence Remix EP, based on their stellar album Dear Science, while we thought it would be a nice accompaniment CD, we assumed the remixes would never trump the originals. We spoke too soon. In "Shout Me Out," producer/remixer Jneiro Jarel of Willie Isz has flooded the originally jazzy track with hand claps, probing bass, woozy electric violin, and gauzy synths - creating a lush and danceable Animal Collective-meets-supernatural-sci-fi vibe. It's just like Saul Williams described Jneiro Jarel's music: "Otherworldly. Beats for hovercraft Saturdays. Makes an alien homesick." As for the rest of the remixes? You can buy the assortment on I-Tunes. Plus join TVOTR's mailing list or check their website to keep up-to-date on what's up next for the Brooklyn indie all-stars.
(Oh and if you were wondering what that melody of "Shout Me Out" reminds you of, it's Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' "Running Down A Dream.")

Ok, though their name may make them sound like a wedding cover band, at least there's little irony in it; DC-based The Dance Party crafts serious hook-heavy power zingers, unabashedly inspired by late night sing-along Journey songs, 80s glam rock and Bloc Party-esque builds. The catchy "Sasha Don't Sleep" is product of their collaboration with NY producer/engineer Andros Rodriguez (who also boasts Justin Timberlake and Ludacris on his resume.) Meanwhile, live, the band has the power hooks, looks, charisma, (not to mention fake-baked Brit-esque accent?) that could easily pack stadiums and get the kids to jump around. They ain't Fugazi, but DC represent.
Sounds Like: Journey, Def Leppard, Tears For Fears, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand

Maybe it's the Cinco di Mayo hangover and I am feeling rather sorry for myself, but all I craved today was a steady dose of sun-flecked, finger-plucked, almost thumb-sucking alt-country jams, the kind made for camp fires, all-day stints in bed, and solemn think sessions on park benches. That said, I've been playing this serene, soothing concoction by Colorado-based Fellow Citizens on repeat. It has got a bit of the warm, reverb soaked guitar of My Morning Jacket, (The male lead even has a similar belted slur as Jim James,) a gossamery melody like Wilco, and a mountain wholesomeness like Blitzen Trapper. The soft female harmony tops off the song just right.
PS In case you are wondering about the title, remember Holden Caulfield is the lead from Catcher In The Rye and Jane was his innocence crush, whom he deliberates half the book about calling....ahh high school memories...
Sounds Like: Blitzen Trapper, My Morning Jacket, Wilco, The Sadies

If this track is any judge, the all-girl Brooklyn nymphs Au Revoir Simone will be cutting new territory with their new album, Still Night, Still Light, (produced by Thom Monahan (Vetiver, Little Joy), out in June). The girls purport that the new record is "exploring reflection, seeking, questioning, and losing one's way home." Unlike their prior soothing, ear-friendly electro pop, the new album airs much more on the experimental side. This remixed "Shadows" track churns out maze-like layers of wonky ambient textures, meshing analog synth, clock like ticks, and deep bass. (After all, the remixers It's A Fine Line (i.e. Tim Paris and Ivan Smagghe), have also tinkered with tracks by labels like Kompakt and History Clock.) But even the lyrics seem eerily unhinged and haunted...
