DOWNLOAD: James Jackson Toth - Nothing Hides

James Jackson Toth, who would get super pissed if you assumed that his role in any of the many incarnations of avant-folky changeling Wooden Wand ever surpassed 'contributor,' has a new album out with his real name on it. We've been reading for a while that he was making a calculated step away from the weird and, going by the sound of this song, we'd say he's sticking to his guns. Sounds kinda like... bummed out electric Vetiver.
Picked up by Rykodisc (i.e. Kill Rock Stars founder and Ryko A&R man, Slim Moon), Toth's got a full length coming out July 29 called Waiting In Vain. Needless to say, we are stoked. Here's a sneak peek of things to come.

If you didn't believe us last time about getting down on that Gram Parsons altar and howling out them Stonesy country blues, just get a look at those nudie suits! These boys aren't shy about who they ride for and that's just as well because it means they don't hold back when they pull their chins back into their necks and scowl out that twang. here's what we said last time - this time we have a real live download!
If this is too country for you, well... maybe you oughta look into getting a little more country. These good ol' Brooklyn boys get down on the altar of Gram Parsons and shake their fallen angel feathers like they were a pack of mid-'70s Stones filthying up the French Riviera. And if this shake-a-mama shit doesn't curl your lip, we got bad news: that thing on your face isn't actually a lip.

Dudes. Graveyard is the Swedish Deep Purple. Deep Swedish Purple! Forgive me for being predictable and losing my shit over ANOTHER psyched out stoner metal trip, but I likes what I likes and I likes this. A heady mix of folk, blues and hard gnar, Graveyard does for "Smoke On The Water" what Dungen did for "Immigrant's Song," not to mention what Soundgarden did for Johnny Cash. Total van rock. Graveyard, like most other bands you're obsessed with, are out on Tee Pee Records.

DOWNLOAD: Phosphorescent - "A Picture Of Our Torn Up Praise"
Yeah, yeah, we've posted this one before, but this time our boy Phosphorescent did you one better and put together one of the oddest and loveliest - one of the most uncommon - videos we ever saw. A perfect fit for his breakthrough record, Pride, that plays like eight tracks of personal revelations. His, not yours. But it's real nice to be along for the ride. Check out the video and download the mp3.

EXCLUSIVE DOWNLOAD: Valet - Fire

After a few months on the road as part of Atlas Sound, collaborator extraordinaire Honey Owens is back in Portland, soaking up local talent and turning it into shimmery space blues as Valet. You gotta hear Naked Acid sometime. Late at night, probably, with the lights low. Or you could skip the music, paint your face, put on feathers, stay awake for three days and stare down your reflection in a pond surrounded by torches on a breezy night. But listening to the stoned slow-motion airplane crash in reverse that is her music is way way easier. And it's free. So just do that.

But quit reading and stomp a boot to this nastified chicken fry. It's got enough singalong swagger and woohoohoo harmonica to cry your Jack Daniels dry. The Weight!

EXCLUSIVE DOWNLOAD: The Limes - Beyond Blue

Remember Orouni? That dashing French who you boyfriended on Monday? Well this is his band, The Limes. At this point I feel that it's necessary to share with you a couple of sentences from their bio:
"The Limes are an inter-continental band consisting of Toy Fight, Orouni, Mina Tindle, John Hale and Brent Ballantyne. Started with the simple idea of sharing musical ideas between the Atlantic, members submit material to each other to interpret and record."
The collective expands on Orouni's twee folk charm, adding oompah marching band atmosphere, summery harmonies and inter-continental ENERGY. Elements of CocoRosie, Boy Least Likely To, Beach Boys, The Cranberries, The Modern Lovers, Peter, Bjorn, their friend John, Danny Elfman, Loney, Dear and all your other favorite bands. Get into it.

In the race to win the heart of the hype machine, it doesn't hurt to have friends like White Rabbits and The Walkmen. But that's not nearly all The Subjects have going for them. The Brooklyn four-piece make wobbly pop gems out of the most unlikely materials, crafting off-key lilts and heady guitar into deadly catchy quirk that calls Quasi, among others, to mind.
