Bio: We are a band from Baltimore, and we call ourselves Wye Oak. We used to call ourselves Monarch, until we found out that exactly seven ... (more) other bands had claimed the name first. Sometimes we still slip up and call ourselves by the wrong name, but we're getting used to it. Fortunately, we are the only band called Wye Oak. When our band plays live, Jenn plays guitar and sings and Andy plays the drums and keyboard and sings. When we record, Andy and Jenn sing and play all the instruments, although each of us play some things better than others. Over the course of many years playing music–together and seperately–we wrote songs. When they were ready, we took several months to record our first album, If Children. Many people have said that our album sounds lush, layered and full, and that we do a pretty good job of capturing that sound on stage, although there are just two of us. We'd like to think that if a song is good enough, it'll stand on its own regardless of how much noise you pile on top. On the other hand, we do like noise. We love our lives in Baltimore, but we want nothing more than to travel and take our music with us. Merge Records will release If Children in April, and until then–and hopefully long after–we'll be very busy taking our songs to as many new places as possible. Also, hopefully writing new ones. (less)
