- Bio: Take one DJ/producer/songwriter famous for being the go-to guy for dance music’s elite when they want a hit, combine with a top-class engineer who’s worked with the likes of Take That, Pulp, Boy George and Nightmares on Wax, add a dash of Arctic Monkeys and Reverend & The Makers and mix well together to a Roots soundtrack. The result: Lords Of Flatbush, best served in Sheffield.
We admit on paper it’s not an obvious combination but one listen to ‘999’ and we promise you’ll hear this is a combination that definitely works, spreading positive vibes in what has to be one of the feel good records of the year. But then again it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise with Steve Neil Edwards as one half of LOF. Having collaborated as a musician and songwriter with the likes of Cassius, Basement Jaxx, Axwell and Bob Sinclar, Steve has forged an enviable position as someone who adds quality and credibility with commercial success. With strong beliefs of love, justice, passion and the truth throughout all his work, it’s no surprise to see his positive energy injected into Lords Of Flatbush with a style they call Two-Tone Jaxx and their MO is simply to have a good time, make you sway and your ears bleed.
Alongside Fill Jones, another thoroughly respected figure behind the scenes as an engineer, Lords Of Flatbush is essentially a partnership from two like-minded and extremely talented friends. As a live band though they are the full show with live drums, bass, guitar, keys and vocals with regular guest appearances from Jon McClure from Reverend & The Makers and Andy Nicholson (original band member), ex-Arctic Monkeys. In fact Matt Helders (drummer of Arctic Monkeys) is currently working on LOF remixes and it’s these local friends and connections that highlight just how strong the Sheffield music scene is, not forgetting Toddla T who’s an official Flatbush DJ and remixer of ‘999’ on this package.
Having already had a huge release with Seamus Haji at the end of 2008 with ’24 Hours’, a song that Steve gave to Seamus and in turn inspired him to create and release a new anthemic version using his trademark sound. The focus is now on ‘999’, the official debut single for Lords Of Flatbush. Successfully fusing Electro, Funk, Punk and Ska, ‘999’ grabs you by the scruff of the neck and throws you in the middle of the dancefloor. It’s a massive song, a proper skanker as they say and with the main chorus line “we’re gonna be there when you are in trouble” you can’t help but feel good when dancing to it. Lords Of Flatbush are here for you; they’re your friends and they’ve got your back. You can count it.
Backed up with remixes from the brilliant Toddla T & Ross Orton and UMSD, expect to be dancing to this on a dancefloor near you very soon. (less)
