Bio: Already an award-winning national sensation in her homeland of Sweden, Jenny Wilson is finally ready to bring her enigmatic pop to the U.S. for the first time, with the release of Hardships! The album will be released on August 24th via Jenny’s Gold Medal Recordings label. And in preparation for her U.S. debut, Wilson is giving away “Only Here for the Fight” as a taste of her new record.

Written, recorded, and produced by Jenny in her Stockholm studio, Hardships! is a mix of Jenny’s idiosyncratic pop arrangements with raw, emotive R&B woven though out. “I wanted Hardships! to feel as simple as salt and pepper on your tongue, and as sparkling as a burning matchstick,” Jenny says. On tracks such as “Like a Fading Rainbow” and “Bad Waters,” Jenny builds modern day spirituals off unique instrumentation including harps, marimbas, synths, and her own multi-tracked vocals, a la Björk’s Medulla. This breathtakingly beautiful album also features vocals from other like-minded songstresses like Mapei on tracks “Pass Me The Salt” and “Motherhood,” and El Perro Del Mar on “Anchor Made of Gold,” a track Pitchfork called “a remarkably even-tempered gospel ballad with a creamy choral arrangement.”
This uncompromising and fiercely independent artist made her first foray into the U.S. music scene at this past fall’s CMJ Music Marathon at Levi’s/FADER Fort, performing an awe-inspiring set to a stunned crowd, prompting The Fader to say that those lucky individuals in attendance can brag “to have witnessed the future-legendary Jenny Wilson’s first show in the United States.” Yet those with a keen ear may recognize her voice from a guest spot on The Knife’s break-out album Deep Cuts. The Knife also released her 2005 debut solo album Love and Youth on their Swedish imprint, Rabid Records. The following year she teamed up with fellow Swedish pop sensation, Robyn, on The Rakamonie EP which includes the two doing a dueling-keys live rendition of Saul Williams “List of Demands.”
Jenny will be touring the US early fall in support of the release, but will be making an earlier visit to NYC June 28th for a few days of special shows and is available for press. More details on both US stints to be announced shortly! (less)
