- Bio: Sometimes a song has that special sprinkling of electronic magic which makes it impossible to resist – and ‘Vaporizer’ by Gingy and Bordello is one such cut. Soon to be released on More Music, Richie Hawtin has given it his royal seal of approval, Simian Mobile Disco are digging it and even Brodinksi is – ahem - banging it. A searing seven minute techno instrumental with a buzzing synth line which sounds not unlike a swarm of angry bees on a big night out at Cocoon, the record is the work of Canadian techno duo Gingy and Bordello – AKA Brian Wong and Anthony Galati. On this evidence alone, there’s no doubt that we’re going to be hearing an awful lot more from the production duo in 2010.
“Basically, Brian used to throw parties in London, Ontario,” says Anthony. (“Not big London!” laughs Brian in the background) “and we liked the same music so we just started talking. We’re talking everything from Boys Noize and Turbo to Berghain dub techno. We wanted to make a classic acid banger at the start then realized that what we actually wanted to do was make a proper techno track. ” Incredibly – for a record so sleek – this is the very first record they’ve made together.
But how has the record travelled so far? Well, you can thank SMD for that. “James and Jas were played in Toronto in March and we are both big fans,” says Anthony. “I just mustered up the courage to ask James for his email and he was kind enough to pass it on to his manager. They’re musical heroes for us. I saw them at Cream Ibiza in 2008 and that kick-started me into wanting to make music – so in a way, we’ve come full circle.” The remix, meanwhile, comes from Rynecologist. “We’ve known Ryne a long time,” they smile. “He’s a part of Toronto’s old school and just really liked the track.”
Citing Fever Ray, !!!, Depeche Mode, DFA Records, Late Of The Pier, The Chemical Brothers and Radiohead circa ‘Kid A’ as key influences, Gingy and Bordello’s mission now “… is just to make good music. Brian and I have a very euro-centric taste. Not enough people get proper techno here in Ontario, but we are hoping to help change that." And ‘Vaporizer’ is just the track to flick that switch. (less)
