  • Bio: Sometimes it is the oddest combinations that work best. In the case of the David Banner and 9th Wonder collaborative album, Death Of A Pop Star, that couldn't ring more true. Known for Southern leaning smashes like “Get Like Me,” as well as his synth heavy production for hits such as T.I’s “Rubberband Man,” 9th Wonder is surely not the first producer people would expect David Banner to work with.

As David Banner describes, “9th Wonder is probably one of the most soulful cats in our generation. Death Of A Pop Star is needed for a balance in the music landscape right now, just like 2 Live Crew and A Tribe Called Quest were needed at the same time." He continues, “There are so many genres within hip-hop now - West Coast, East Coast, Emo, Backpack, Gangsta. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter what it is, it just needs to be good.”

9th Wonder feels that, despite what may be seen as an unusual pairing, it really isn’t. "David Banner and I both share the same views in manhood, being black in America in present day, and the state of black music in general." 9th Wonder further explains, “David and I hash out a lot of options before we actually do a song. Once we get past all the options, the end result is always clear.”

Overall, it is the music business that played a large role in the vision of this project. David Banner believes the system systematically replaces mainstream artists with concepts. The industry is additionally taking an artist's power to make money away and reduce the pop star to a free download. This realization changed Banner's initial plan for Death Of A Pop Star as a free album to a full retail release. Banner explains, "We were originally going to make it a free mixtape release, but then we realized it was bigger than that. We need to stop making so many mixtapes because it instilling a belief in hip-hop fans that music should be free.

While Death Of A Pop Star currently exists as David Banner and 9th Wonder, further editions will be coming out with different artist combinations. "Who knows what Death Of A Pop Star may be in the future? Next year, it might be Lil Wayne and Pete Rock. 9th Wonder and I would still oversee it, but we don't know what it will be."

Death Of A Pop Star will hit stores this summer. (less)
