Bio: When Diplo returned from a trip to Buenos Aires last year raving about these new "cumbia digital" sounds the kids were cooking up, we knew ... (more) he was on to some shit. (This was, after all, the man who first alerted us to the baile funk phenomenon.) Artists like Hijo De La Cumbia, El Remelon and DJ Negro are turning the traditional Argentinian style on its ear, experimenting with elements of rap, dubstep and dancehall, and generally making cumbia even less socially acceptable than it already was. That's a good thing in our book, and apparently in the books of California DJs Oro11 and Disco Shawn as well. The two met while living in Argentina and formed the cumbia-centric label Bersa Discos upon their return to the Bay area. Their first release, BERSA DISCOS #1, dropped at the beginning of the year and featured heaters from Daleduro, Hijo De La Cumbia and Oro. Needless to say, we approve. (less)
