If you’re reading this press release; that means that you’re either in the music industry or you’re reading a blog. If you are in the music industry, be honest, how close are you to giving up? Wonky fucking Pop, indie-pop, pop-electro-pop: alt kids expressing their authenticity by bouncing through life talking about pop music like they invented liking it. These dicks control everything.
Comanechi aren’t pop, anyone who says they are is a pretentious liar. They’re pop in the same way that Spaceman 3 and Glitter Pals are pop. Comanechi are loved up and really wired because they spend every night awake at parties listening to Nirvana and ruining a generation of Japanese kids through their blog. Akiko is their singer and their drummer, she’s also in bands called Sperm Javelin, The Big Pink and Pre. She’s the best thing about a scene which everyone hates-on but has made more uncompromising music than anyone in the north in about ten years. If Merok will stretch to the printing budget then you should see a picture of her just here…
…if they won’t then just imagine a teenage Asian chick standing on a pile of dead bodies smoking a cigarette. Everyone in London wants to screw Akiko. Everyone not in London just wants to meet her (seriously, she’s an icon in Japan, she went to do solo shows there at Christmas and they were totally rammed). I don’t know Simon, the guitarist in Comanechi, personally, but he’s pretty fucking good at his job: playing shit rattle ‘n’ roll like Bikini Kill’s reanimated corpse. He’s a also a member of the RSPB and Camra.
Their new album is called Crime of Love and because I got to hear it I know how good it is.
Crime of Love is a clever record, not one that’s been rushed for myspace hits. It’s a heavy grunge piece that encourages unsafe sex. It’s a punk record full of love songs; love songs to boys and girls and acid and parties. It's also totally DIY – they recorded and produced the album with friends in basements, studio downtime and even snuck into a Chris de Burgh session to recorded three tracks over a weekend while no one was looking.
Klaxons are going to support them on tour soon because Comanechi are their favourite band. Comanechi are really a lot better than anyone on your iPod (unless you’ve got some old Comanechi singles on it, in which case they’re just a bit better than that). Comanechi have just come back from a series of dates with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and have also recently played with the Gossip, Klaxons and Siouxsie Sioux. (less)
