- Bio: Capgun Coup was born amidst the banality of suburban Nebraska circa 2004. Post-high school graduation, Sam Martin (vocals/guitar) and Greg Elsasser (guitar/vocals) – the driving artistic forces of the band – eschewed the option of financial stability and began pursuing music full-time. The band’s originally self-released 2007 debut Brought To You By NebraskaFish (written predominantly while the pair was still in high school) garnered them respect within the Omaha music community, a Team Love Records reissue, and multiple national tours with artists such as Cursive, Bright Eyes, Tilly & The Wall, and The Good Life, among others.
Maudlin, their sophomore album, was written while the band lived in Omaha, NE’s communal Hotel Frank, the famed/infamous residence of many young artists and musicians in the city since the late ‘80s. In late 2008/early 2009, Capgun Coup took brief refuge and continued writing at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha, which offered the band studio space as part of its musician residency program. Maudlin – recorded in late spring 2009 at ARC Studios with AJ Mogis – combines surf-rock guitars and beautifully dissonant vocals, with Jesse McKelvey’s spastic guitar playing, Eric Ohlsson’s drumming, and Roadie’s bass lines bringing together the creative tornadoes that reside in Martin and Elsasser’s heads. Capgun Coup, as they continue cementing their place in the independent music scene, have created their most cohesive and mature work to date. (less)
