RCRD LBL launched in 2007, as a joint venture between Downtown Music LLC (Gnarls Barkley, Cold War Kids, Santigold), and online media pioneer Peter Rojas (Engadget, Gizmodo, Weblogs, Inc.), and was instantly regarded as a revolutionary force in the distribution of music online.

Kid Cudi
In early 2008 RCRD LBL was the first site to post a free download of hip hop star Kid Cudi's single "Day 'N' Nite". The track, a remix by producers Crookers, went on to be a chart topping single in over 20 countries and earned Cudi an MTV Music Video Award Nomination for Best New Artist. Since its debut on RCRD LBL, "Day 'N' Nite" has sold over 2 Million singles in the US alone and continues to be a favorite in clubs to this day.

Passion Pit
On the indie/dance side of things, RCRD LBL was an early champion of Boston group Passion Pit, who have quickly risen to being one of the biggest and well loved indie bands since their debut on the site in the summer of 2008. The song RCRD LBL featured, "Sleepyhead", is now part of an international TV spot for the Palm Pre phone and is one of the group's most popular singles. In appreciation of RCRD LBL's early support, both the band and management have provided RCRD LBL with scores of exclusive new remixes of their subsequent singles.
