Doug Marvin and Annie Hart are kind of like indie rock royalty: Doug is the drummer and vocalist of NYC indie poppers Dirty on Purpose, and Annie is the front woman for synth-pop lady troupe Au Revoir Simone. Together, they create melodic pop ballads with Purse Snatchers, Doug's ambitious home recording project. We're releasing their first exclusive RCRD LBL single today, entitled "Christmas Lights" (just in time for the festive season!), and it's a lovely, stark number. The song will also be spinning on WOXY's holiday mixer starting this week. Tune in here: http://woxy.lala.com/holiday.php.
The Modular RCRD LBL blog just posted the video for the new Presets single "My People", out digitally on December 18th. In classic Presets fashion, the video is an electronic fever dream of climaxing beats and powerful vocals. Peep it below.
We're very proud to be offering an exclusive download from Dirty on Purpose, who over the years have carved themselves quite the niche within the NYC indie scene. Their last album Hallelujah Sirens catapulted them to the next strata of indie stardom (with songs like the widely-acclaimed "No Radio") and their latest EP Like Bees is equally as satisfying.
Today, RCRD LBL is offering you "Leaving", the first track off of an exclusive EP entitled Dead Volcanoes, available only through our Web site! "Leaving" is a slight departure from DoP's usual bouncy, fuzzed-out indie pop. It's a tender, slide guitar-driven ballad, perfect for that melancholy holiday spirit. Check it out below, and keep your eyes peeled for more tracks off of Dead Volcanoes in the weeks to come.
Our friends over at Kompakt just posted a track from Brazilian techno producer Gui Boratto called "Beautiful Life", which is an eight-and-a-half-minute dizzying electronic crescendo of synths and crisp beats. Kompakt are giving away the original version of the song that became a runaway hit this summer, so check out the Kompakt RCRD LBL blog and download it! Link below...
The Kills are about to release their much-awaited third album on Domino Records in the new year, and we can't wait. It's strange that there's already an air of nostalgia surrounding the band, but it's completely true: we yearn for their post-punk grungey style like never before. Their new single is called "U R A Fever" and fans of their previous work will not be disappointed. Check out the video...
Electrobang duo The Bloody Beetroots have just scored a mini Euro tour with Justice this week, and Discobelle has posted a few podcasts and MP3s from the band to celebrate. If you're into Justice, Simian, Fluokids or any of the other DJs taking over electronic music at the moment, you'll be a pretty big fan of the Beetroots. More info at the link!
Cobblestone Jazz, a Canadian electro-lounge band with a decidedly awesome name, sound like what Booka Shade would be if they listened to more Herbie Hancock and less Orb. Their minimal techno stylings would sound right at home in some post modern German wine bar, but manage to stay away from the cheese factor and make some compelling electronica. Cobblestone Jazz's song "What You Want" is MP3 of the day on Spinner.com, so click the link and peruse at your leisure.
Leave it to the staff of Drowned in Sound to keep you stocked in awesome tunes. Over the past few days the DiS RCRD LBL blog has been super active, posting songs from bands as diverse as Sleeping States (the acoustic, folked-out moniker of UK troubadour Markland Starkie) to electronic rebels Errors (who take home the Best EP Title of the Year Award for How Clean Is Your Acid House?). Check out some links from the DiS blog below and let them know what you think...
Today we have a new Meanest Man Contest song entitled "I Would Leave" for all you RCRD LBL fans out there. The track is MMC's second for us and is a droning electro slow-jam, which draws a very stark contrast to their first RCRD LBL single, "Partially Smart" (which was a super indie hip-hop track). As an added treat, "I Would Leave" features a sample from "Lichen", a song by Ghostly International artist and RCRD LBL-affiliate Christopher Willits. It's a prefect chill-out song, and with hip-hop and ambient now part of their repertoire, who knows what the mighty MMC will come up with next?
Our friends over at the Dim Mak RCRD LBL blog have posted a new song in their DSCVR DIM MAK series, this time regarding nu-Brit-pop band of merry men The Rakes, and their 2005 indie hit "Retreat". Dim Mak were the label to introduce this band to the States, and the Retreat EP was a highlight of that year for all anglophiles. We know you were in it back in the day, but take a trip down memory lane and download "Retreat" at the Dim Mak blog!
