Youth Lagoon is Trevor Powers – a Boise resident that has caused a stir over the last year with his endlessly catchy, uber-personal songs. We got him to go On The RCRD and tell us about how Kid A changed his life, his biggest influences, how teleportation could come in handy and why people should just step back and spend some time with records.

Life changing record for you was…

One of those life changing records for me was Kid A by Radiohead. I remember getting the CD and just playing it over and over. One of the tracks, "Idioteque," is still one of my favorite songs of all time. There is so much emotion in the way that album was written and recorded. Truly phenomenal.

What people, outside of music, have influenced you over the last year?

There are many people in the circles around me that I admire and look up to. Most of those people are my closest friends. Also, my parents have been the most influential in my life. We disagree on a lot of things, but they are the most supportive people in my life. When I was growing up, the issues that we always butted heads about are really what helped shaped me into who I am today.

What did you learn about yourself and/or the world at large the last time you made a record?

In recording, one thing I've learned is that the things that are meant to happen shouldn't be forced. They will happen on their own time. Also, I've learned that when our minds are too preoccupied with fears, we never have time to focus on our goals. It's like when an archer shoots an arrow, he would never focus on the areas he doesn't want to hit.

What gift would you most like to possess?

Teleportation

What quality do you admire most in a song?

Thought

What's your take on the music business in 2012?

It's always evolving and because of the constant advancements in technology, it's much easier for people to get their hands on music. That has caused countless changes in the way each area of music works now. With how easy it is to get music now, it's all the more important to spend time with it. We live in a world now where many people only listen to a record once before moving on to the next thing. I hate that. It should never be that way. When the only way to get music was walking down to a record store and buying it, people cherished it more. It may be a bit romantic of me to wish that on everyone, but I really think the only way music speaks to you is when you spend time with it.

Best instrument ever invented was....

Piano
