I have no idea who Mao really is, because today’s trend of obscuring musical artist info wants it that way. The release that came across my desk was littered with snippets like “orphanage,” “wicked alcoholic matron,” and “carrier pigeon,” along with my favorite of favorites “next level shit.” But the tune that accompanied it; oh the tune that accompanied it. On his major redub of London bass team Maribou State’s “Olivia,” Mao’s made sickeningly good on that pitch, the talented bastard(s?). This fidgety, blissful dance punch of xylophone synths, soulful vox, big bass and ominous stomps is not daylight music. Though we'll be blasting it on repeat until dusk, trust.
