Gotye is an ethereal, naked and paint-spattered, outsider singer-songwriter with over 19 million views on his breakout video for “Somebody That I Used To Know.” His music? Meant for weeping, gorgeously and preferably in a museum. With the aide of British mind-melter Bibio, he becomes even softer and vulnerable as subtle bleeps and bird calls undulate under his cracked dance feet. But, under the gaze of his fellow Aussies PVT, he is something else entirely. Stranger, and wildly animalistic, as his initially lovely vocals on “Eyes Wide Open” chop and slip their way into a wall of unsettling sounds that are more mood than music. Good stuff, no matter which direction you ultimately go.
