PREMIERE: Grimes - Crystal Balls (Young Galaxy Remix)

This weekend, I took my first trip to Canada for the FME festival where a bajillion Montreal bands had traveled 8 hours only to perform in backyards, cramped clubs, and on train tracks. Being American, I didn’t quite get their generosity. I mean, why all the trouble when they could play a stadium, guzzle a case in the green room, and be done with it? But now, as I listen to Young Galaxy’s spongy beats, palpitating samples, atonal synths, and chords winking under sylph vocals, perhaps I do understand. This refit of fellow countrywoman Grimes’ “Crystal Balls” is a song that explains Montreal’s finest musicians: they are woodland creatures who’d journey to the outer limits simply to connect with fans, because they are full of gratitude and light. YG’s next move is a tour with Junior Boys, while their album Shapeshifting is out now on Paper Bag.
